About the Author
Johnjoe McFadden is Professor of Molecular Genetics at the University of Surrey and is the editor of several leading text books. For over a decade, he has specialized in examining tuberculosis and meningitis, inventing the first successful molecular test for the latter. He is the author of Quantum Evolution and co-editor of Human Nature: Fact and Fiction.

Jim Al-Khalili OBE is an academic, author, and broadcaster. He is a leading theoretical physicist based at the University of Surrey, where he teaches and carries out research in quantum mechanics. He has written a number of popular science books, including Pathfinders: The Golden Age of Arabic Science. He has presented several television and radio documentaries, including the BAFTA-nominated Chemistry: A Volatile History and The Secret Life of Chaos.

Cutting-edge topic entertainingly explored with widely sourced top-notch research for support

Quantum physics is certainly weird, but it isn't controversial any more. Quantum effects make technologies such as MRI possible. The authors do a good job of explaining the various physical quantum effects. The description of the famous two slit experiment is very clear in this book. Even though you find the results bizarre, you do understand what the results were and what they say about the quantum world.

Quantum effects in biology do not seem bizarre. There is no additional weirdness, just quantum weirdness applied to minute biological processes. The authors focus on where and how quantum effects come into play, for example, in bird navigation or photosynthesis. The authors deal with the questions of why you need quantum physics rather than classical physics to explain specific results. They explain how a particular quantum effect achieves (or could achieve) a desired end. They explore how a tiny or animal cell can maintain quantum coherence (i.e. preservation of a quantum state necessary for quantum effects) long enough to allow the process to complete when physics labs cannot maintain quantum coherence for nearly as long despite massive equipment. Finally they explain how minute events can have a profound influence on living beings which are vastly bigger despite a general expectation in the scientific community that something tinier than a hair on a dog's tail could not possibly wag the dog.

Aside from being easy and enjoyable to read, the book references published experiments and theoretical papers used in building up the narrative, including some papers which were published only months before the book was published. You get a feeling of observing the state of quantum biology just a few months ago. The authors also do a good job of showing what's speculative and what has been supported by research conducted in labs around the world. You end up feeling there is ample reason to believe that quantum physics plays an important role in biological processes.

This was an immensely enjoyable read.The approach that the authors took clearly showed that their discussion of quantum biology was not some theoretical musings but based on hard science.They would begin with current accepted ideas such as robins' ability to use the EM fields to navigate, to how the chlorophyll process work. They would then identify areas where there was no clear explanation of of how certain processes worked such as the remarkable efficiency of the chlorophyll molecule to transfer virtually 100 % of the energy received to the reaction center. They then showed how certain quantum processes could be a useful area of research such as quantum superposition states to explain for example the the remarkable energy transfer rates. They also made it absolutely clear all the way through the book that while quantum processes could explain many areas currently not understood, it was too early to conclusively say that the biological processes did make use of all the variety of quantum processes. The mark of serious scientists.

They assumed that the reader had very little deep knowledge of molecular biology (thankfully!) or of basic quantum mechanics and made extensive use of analogies most of which were extremely helpful. This book is a great introduction to this new and expanding field of quantum biology and would recommend it to anyone fascinated by this subject.

A fascinating new field of research narrated with passion and wit.

First of all let me assure everyone that "Life on the Edge" is an easy to read science book even for people, like myself, who are not experts in quantum mechanics and biology. What attracted me to this book was the quite-intriguing title and the fact that I have been familiar to how Jim Al-Khalili was always able to explain complicated stuff in an easy to understand way. So I gave it a try and, as soon as I started reading it, I have been captivated by its narrative. It was like reading a thriller. The authors, Jim Al-Khalili and Johnjoe McFadden, have succeeded in giving an illuminating account on a new field of research which may one day give a decisive contribution in understanding life and its secrets. Many thanks to both authors. You have been able to reconcile me with the weirdness of quantum mechanics, while illustrating with vividness and clarity some of the exciting and wonderful tricks being used by nature.

Sandra Ingerman
Sandra Ingerman, MA, is the author of eight books including Soul Retrieval, Medicine for the Earth, How to Heal Toxic Thoughts, and How to Thrive in Changing Times. With Sounds True, she has published the books Shamanic Journeying: A Beginner’s Guide and Awakening to the Spirit World: The Shamanic Path of Direct Revelation (coauthored with Hank Wesselman) as well as five audio programs, including Shamanic Meditations: Guided Journeys for Insight, Vision, and Healing and Soul Journeys: Music for Shamanic Practice.

Sandra teaches workshops internationally on shamanic journeying, healing, and reversing environmental pollution using spiritual methods. Excellent for connecting with spiritual

This has been very helpful to me. I'm sure there is excellent psychology behind the exercises. It is very positive throughout. Any examples of negative human traits are brief and to the point, to explain why and how we can change. There is enough material here, and enough exercises, to keep a person busy growing and connecting for a very long time.

I am nearly to the end of the book, even though I have been careful to read only small bits at a time. I like to give myself time to process each bit, to get maximum effect. The book is easy enough to read that I could have finished it quickly, and still gained much, but I wanted to feel it on a deeper level. I know I will be going back through it many times, as these exercises can be helpful done many times, and besides, I can't possibly remember everything.

I wasn't sure I would like this book. If memory serves, that doubt lingered into the very first of the book. I was pleasantly surprised, even amazed at how perfect this book is for what I need at this time. So many great ways to connect with our spiritual self, and the spiritual world.

Tom Geismar is a founding partner of Chermayeff & Geismar and widely considered a pioneer of American graphic design. During the past four decades he has designed more than a hundred corporate identity programs. His designs for Xerox, Chase Manhattan Bank, Best Products, Gemini Consulting, PBS, Univision, Rockefeller Center and, most notably, Mobil Oil have received worldwide acclaim.

Sagi Haviv
Sagi Haviv is a partner and designer at Chermayeff & Geismar. Among his numerous projects for the firm are the logo designs and identity systems for the Library of Congress, National Parks of New York Harbor, The John D. and Catherine C. MacArthur Foundation, Conservation International, and the fashion brand Armani Exchange.�

Ivan Chermayeff
A prolific designer, illustrator, and artist, Ivan has created memorable, iconic images for literally hundreds of clients. Great reference book

This is a great book to keep as reference of corporate identity design. C&G are probably the best designers of their field, responsible for many outstanding brands. The only reason I don't rate it 5 stars is because I expected to see a little more of the construction of the most important brands, the method employed by the office to make the brand what it has become. We see just a few sketches, but not the actual work to turn it into reality.

All in all, it is a superb example of identity design, which can just make me feel jealous - or challenged, to reach at least 1/20th of what they have achieved as designers.

Wordmarks, logos and everything in between

A handsomely produced book of some distinctive brand identities created by Chermayeff & Geismar. Some of them must have entered the public consciousness by now: NBC (the peacock) PBS; Chase Manhattan; Mobil; Pan Am; Xerox (before the current one) National Geographic. Others have only been seen within certain industries or outside the US. There are several logos for the Turkish Koc Holdings.

The book, though, was rather disappointing for me because it's not much more than a portfolio of C&G work rather than a visual account of how each design was created. There is some quite detailed text on some of these marks which does in fact sum up the thinking behind the visual but I was expecting to see various roughs and scribbled ideas that created the final design. This does occur in a few but most pages show previous marks on a left-hand page with the logo centered on all the right-hand pages. Also missing is any explanation of why a particular typeface was chosen for those designs that are just typographic.

The pages really should have delivered more and I see that copies can be picked quite cheaply since publication in 2011. Worth getting maybe just to see these logos well printed and in a reasonable size.

Great album

Great album of C&G identities. Not really informative about the way of creating those brands and trademarks.
But as for album with huge illustration of their logos it is fine.

Shipping was so long, it took almost 1 month to receive a package.

The Carpetbaggers made Robbins' name a household word in the early sixties, especially after it was made into a movie starring George Peppard. So now, 30 years and 13 books later, Robbins has written a sequel, figuring, no doubt, that glitzy novels featuring big bucks, big boobs, and plenty of showy sex are always in demand. The Carpetbaggers focused on Jonas Cord, Sr., a Howard Hughes knockoff with a fondness for aviation, moviemaking, and broads. The crux of the story involved his stealing the woman his son, Jonas, Jr., wanted to marry. Now, 20 years later, Jonas, Jr., regrets the fact that he and his manipulative, cutthroat father never exchanged any words of love. He believes he would do better if he had a son, but is anything but affectionate to his only daughter. When The Raiders begins it's the early fifties and Jonas is on the lam, hiding from the feds first in a Las Vegas penthouse, then in Mexico City. These interludes change his life: he decides to invest in the gambling business, and, after looking up an old lover, discovers that he does have a son after all, a son related to Cuba's dictator Batista no less. Jonas the Third has dual Mexican and American citizenship, and is a war hero and Harvard law school graduate. In no time these two egomaniacs are locked in bitter competition for control of the Cord empire and various gorgeous women. While Robbins' plot involving Vegas, the Mob, Havana, Jimmy Hoffa, and the early years of television is serviceable enough, and his characters entertaining, this novel is cartoonish and hackneyed, rife with blatantly sexist sex and laughable dialogue. Like millions of readers, I always wondered what became of Jonas and Nevada after 'The Carpetbaggers', and when 'The Raiders' was released, I grabbed a copy the same day. A great sequel to a towering bestseller.

With Robbins, you gotta be prepared for sex, but........

Over the past several books, what you get is an increasing level of raunch, pure and simple. It's really wierd to say that, because I'm no prude. I was a line soldier in the Sexual Revolution. Okay, the story line in a Robbins book is usually strong--I only know of a couple which are really weak in this way. But Jonas and his part-Latino son both enjoy the favors of two different actresses who work for them, plus the son is successfully seduced by his half-sister. You could excuse that from a couple of guys who go by the Casanova credo "why should I make one woman miserable when I can make several women happy?", but both of these guys have real girlfriends who they respect and who respect them. It was a given in "The Carpetbaggers" that the Cord family aren't exactly poster children for maturity--this book makes them seem positively adolescent. The celebrated decadence of Hollywood is almost a cliche--this book goes a long way to reinforce that image.

Better than Usual Trash from Robbins, but Still Trash

A sequel to "The Carpetbaggers," "The Raiders" is not as good as its predecessor. However, it is one of Harold Robbins' better novels, especially in comparison to the dreck he had been cranking out since 1980. "The Raiders" kicks off in 1951, with Jonas Cord dodging a subpoena to a Senate hearing (and driving his wife Monica to divorce him -- again). With the help of his longtime friend/father figure Nevada Smith (now in his seventies), he finds a safe haven in, of all places, Las Vegas. Jonas, ever on the lookout to make still more money, becomes intrigued by the casino gambling biz, not only buying the casino and hotel in which he's holed up, but building one of his own. It's while exploring the viability of a casino in Cuba that he learns of an illegitimate son he sired with Sonja Batista, one of the many women he's bedded. (Given Jonas' hyperactive sex life, it's surprising that he has only *one* illegitimate child.) It's the relationship between this newly discovered son, nicknamed Bat -- from Batista -- and his domineering father that make up the bulk of the book, Bat struggling to prove himself yet retain his independence while his father generously appoints his son to high positions in his empire only to second guess -- often overrule -- Bat's decisions. The relationship between father and son becomes more contentious as they pursue ventures in TV production and casino gambling, but it's their tangle with the Mafia that could prove deadly.

There are side trips along the way into various characters' back stories, some of which are interesting, some not so much. As is to be expected from Robbins, there's lots of sex. However, given that from the mid-1970s forward many of Robbins' books read like letters in Penthouse Forum, he shows relative restraint here. Unapologetic male chauvinism is another Robbins staple, but even Larry Flynt would bristle at the hostile portrayal of women in "The Raiders." In Robbins' world, women are either vindictive harpies or compliant sex goddesses, and all are slaves to the male member. This includes Jonas Cord's legitimate daughter Jo-Ann, who is pretty much dismissed as a spoiled drunk, by her parents and by Robbins. Father and son frequently end up sharing the same woman, though not at the same time (like I said, Robbins is relatively restrained this time out). Jo-Ann does seduce her half-brother, however.

Only a few of Robbins' novels -- "A Stone for Danny Fisher," "The Carpetbaggers" -- have come within spitting distance of possessing literary merit. "The Raiders" isn't one of them. But while the book is trash, it's better than most of the trash Robbins wrote during the latter half of his career.
