How can he win in his new, self-assumed role as "Mr. Helpful" when his divorced parents are out of control, his Grandma is surly and morbid, and Olivia, the mean blind girl he's forced to homeschool with, calls him a "hyper retard"? Even Olivia's religious mother can't save him with her "What would Jesus do?" refrain. As his world of flawed adults spins around him in carnivalesque chaos, Joey has to decide on a daily basis what he, Joey, should do. At least he has Pablo, his loyal Chihuahua mutt, his lucky charm. Joey is a wonderful character, and his first-person narrative is both hilarious and heartbreaking. Sadly, it is his dying grandmother who knows him best: "You know, Joey, if you didn't wear those med patches, you'd just be thinking about yourself, and you wouldn't care about making everyone happy. Your problem is that you got better, and the rest of the world didn't." While it is more rewarding to have read the previous Joey books before this one, it is not mandatory. Grade 4-8-Joey's back, and this time he's not doing as much of the "weird Joey stuff" as usual. Now that he's ready to be "Mr. Helpful," it seems that everyone around him needs more help than he can give. His mom and dad have crazy fights involving motorcycle crashes, kidnapped Chihuahuas, and a restraining order. Joey's new homeschool partner is Olivia, a blind girl who earns the title of "Mistress of All Evil," and whose fundamentalist mother teaches them. And Grandma, the person who best understands Joey, is dying. The boy's first-person narration is as frenetically fun as it was in the first two books. Here, though, his energy and insights are turned more on those around him, and he turns out to be terrifically perceptive. His observations are totally believable because he vividly recalls (and sometimes still indulges in) dysfunctional behavior. His ability to connect with several diversely troubled personalities sets up many humorous scenes. A convoluted, but oddly logical scheme involving Olivia, Grandma, and tickets to Godspell culminates in the boy's touching (and very funny) first date. By book's end, Joey has lost a loved one, but he has gained enough confidence, and even wisdom, to look out for himself without letting his external problems overwhelm him or hold him back. Readers who don't know Joey will have no trouble jumping right in with this book, and those who have met him in the previous books will enjoy the way "Mr. Helpful" tries to set things right in a chaotic and uniquely amusing world.

WWJD?

"My dad showed up on a motorcycle and my mom who claims not to like him stuck a broom in the spokes yesterday as he buzzed our front yard and he ended up flying through the air and stabbing himself on a tree branch, so then I thought she liked him again but it turns out she didn't because later she tried to hit him in the face with a water glass in front of her new boyfriend." This is just one prime example of how chaotic Joey Pigza's life is.

This moving, yet comical novel brings you through the challenging moments of Joey Pigza's life. His goal throughout this fictional is to help everyone that comes in contact with him happy. Being a blind girl's classmate and "Secret Helper", putting all of the items that are out of order back in place at the grocery store, returning all of the lost dogs back to their home, trying to help his family become somewhat normal, and convincing his grandma that she will not die tomorrow, his grandma teaches him that he needs to stop trying to make the world happy, and focus on making himself happy.

Jack Gantos has written numerous books such as the Rotten Ralph children picture books. He is the author of many novels such as the series of the Joey Pigza novels, Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key,Joey Pigza Loses Control, and What Would Joey Do? Jack Gantos also wrote Heads or Tails, Jack's Black Book, Jack's New Power, and Jack on the Tracks. Jack Gantos's writing style is easy yet fun to read as he keeps you so interested you don't want to place the book down.

I would recommend What Would Joey Do? to the fifth through the seventh grade student. This novel is fascinating to any gender. From reading all of the Joey Pigza books, What Would Joey Do? is a definite must.

Guide to a 5

The exercises are very straightforward, especially with CM theory background (Level 10, 100%). Supplement this with Barron's to get a better idea of how the listening section is, and more in depth, necessary information on the reading part too. I wish I had done all the CD exercises, but I didn't have time. I self-studied during freshman year and got a 5.

Summary:
You need Barron's prep book too to fully prepare (especially the practice tests there)
Make sure you work through the whole book and understand everything
Watch whsapmusictheory (Youtube) for any shaky concepts, especially the chord notation sections
Practice sight singing (with the help of a well-tuned piano), and record with a computer (try Audacity software). Listen to yourself too.
If you are not the best at ear training, make sure you practice (with both books).

Have fun! I found AP MT to be extremely enjoyable. The test is hard, but the curve is extremely generous (I thought I would get a 2).

This book is very thorough. A well designed and methodical approach to the large volume of material in the AP Music Theory test. I use it as a teacher and have seen great results with my students. Any student taking this test should have this book!

Great AP Prep Book

If you have completed through level 10 in Keith Snell's Fundamentals of Piano Theory or Julie Johnson's Basics of Keyboard Theory, this is the book for you. It fills that gap between level 10 and the AP requirements, like sight singing and dictation. Years ago I took the AP Music Theory exam without anything but ReSa to prepare me. Now, I have my piano students use the Snell or Johnson books and then this fabulous AP prep book.

My son loves the diary of a wimpy kid series. He can't put them down which is great because he has ADD and can't focus on a ton of things that don't peak his interest. He has the entire serious so I figured I would get him these since he read all of the other books. He loves these just as much as the wimpy kid series.

Funny but sassy.

Bought these for my 8-year-old son at his request. They arrived on time and in good condition. They are not my favorite kids' series, as I find the main character Nate to be a bit sassy and sarcastic, but it's one of the few book series that my son will actually carry around with him and read by himself with no prompting.. in the car, in the waiting room, or just curled up on the couch on Sunday morning.

About the Author

Frank Ayres Jr., PhD, was formerly professor and head of the Department of Mathematics at Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He is the author of eight Schaum's Outlines.

Robert E. Moyer taught mathematics at Southwest Minnesota State University. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics Education from the University of Illinois in 1974. From Southern Illinois University he received his Master of Science in 1967 and his Bachelor of Science in 1964, both in Mathematics Education.

5/13: Schaum's Outlines: Trigonometry is so good that it's actually my basis of what I know about trigonometry. Thanks to the book: my foundation of trigonometry translated to success in Calculus. Everything I know about trigonometry starts with Schaum's Outlines: Trigonometry. I solved every problem in the book, and the clouds got smaller and smaller every time I do a problem. The explanations by the authors are very clear and concise. Probably the only missing segment in the book is what happens when you see a segment of a sinusoid and are asked to derive an equation from that. Not to worry, Schaum's Outlines: Trigonometry covers about 95% of the essential materials about trigonometry. All in all, do every problem in Schaum's Outlines: Trigonometry from cover to cover, and you will be surprised how well prepared you will be for Calculus and beyond.

what is presented gives the student a good idea of how to tackle certain problems

Where are the sections on logarithms and exponential functions? I understand that this is an outline, but aren't these important trig topics? Why aren't there any problems involving reflected trig graphs. There is a section on graphs; why not include a few negative graphs? This is very frustrating. So, now, I have to find another supplement. However, what is presented gives the student a good idea of how to tackle certain problems.

Well Written Look at Long Neglected Topic

This is a extremely well-written, easy to understand investigation of a topic long overdue for a more public unveiling. Long the secret tool of a BizTalk developer, BAM has never really stretched outside the BizTalk shadow despite its ability to support a wide range of input clients (WF, WCF, custom .NET code).

This book is organized in a way that first introduces the concepts and use cases of Business Activity Monitoring and then transitions into how to actually accomplish things with Microsoft BAM platform. The book closes with an architectural assessment that describes how BAM really works.

Early in the book, the authors looked at a number of situations (B2B, B2C, CSC, SOA, ESB, BPM, and mashups) and explained the relevance of BAM in each. This was a wise way to encourage the reader to think about BAM for more than just straight BizTalk solutions. It also showcases the value of capturing business metrics across applications and tiers.

The examples in the book were excellent, and one nice touch I liked was after the VERY first "build a BAM solution" demonstration, there was a solid section explaining how to troubleshoot the various things that might have gone wrong. Given how many times the first demonstration goes wrong for a reader, this was a very thoughtful addition and indicative of the care given to this topic by the authors.

You'll also find a quite thorough quest to explain how to use the WCF and WF BAM interceptors including descriptions of key configuration attributes in addition to numerous examples of those configurations in action.

The book goes to great lengths to try and shine a light on aspects of BAM that may have been poorly understood and it offers concrete ways to address them. You'll find suggestions for how to manage the numerous BAM solution artifacts, descriptions of the databases and tables that make up a BAM installation and it is one of the only places you can find a clear write up of the flow of data driven by the SSIS/DTS packages. The authors also talk about topics such as relationships and continuations which may have not been clear to developers in the past.

What else will you find here? You'll see how to create all sorts of observation models in Excel, how to exploit the BAM portal or use other reporting environments, how to use either the TPE or the BAM API to feed the BAM interceptors, a well explained discussion on archiving, and how to encourage organizational acceptance and adoption of BAM.

I'd contend that if this book came out in 2005 (which it could have, given that there have only been a few core changes to the offering since then), you'd see BAM as a mainstream option for Microsoft-based activity monitoring. That didn't happen, so countless architects and developers have missed out on a pretty sophisticated architecture that is fairly easy to use. Will this book change all that? Probably not, but if you are a BizTalk architect today, or simply find the idea of flexibly modeling, capturing and reporting key business indicators to be compelling, you really should read this book.

A complete guide to BAM

This book is the complete learning guide to BAM, previously hard to find.

It covers both development, administration and business aspects of BAM. And with Business I don't solely mean the Business Analyst role, but also where BAM fits, where it makes sense, and how you can get your data into the observation model as well as how you can get it out and report and research on it, to add value to your business users.

Although BAM presently is a BizTalk bundled technology the book approaches BAM from a BizTalk independent way, and talks as much about BAM in relation to other connected system technologies like WCF and WF as it does BizTalk. But that's in line with the trends of BizTalk in general, where WCF more and more is taking on a very central role. The book also from time to time puts things in context of the very latest technology and concepts such as Dublin and Oslo although it's very far from being in focus.

It also goes into great detail about how to use the different types of tooling that comes along with BAM aimed for the different roles of Business Analyst, Developer, Administrator, and Information Worker (or Data Consumer as the book calls it). I also like how the book has sections on troubleshooting, should everything not work as expected, and tips that goes beyond just configuring it into also living with it.

It's a great addition to my library and I'm a better BizTalker for reading it. If you grasp the knowledge contained in this book you have earned the right to call yourself a BAM wiz.

The best BAM resource available, period

This book covers everything you could possibly need to know about implementing a BAM solution. It is THE BOOK on BAM. No other book comes close to being as thorough as this book.

This book is also the best resource available for learning the ins and outs of the BAM WF and WCF Interceptor. It contains all the detail needed for implementing an enterprise wide BI gathering solution using the BAM WF and WCF Interceptor.

The book is very well written and the authors write in a style that make the topics easy to understand.

The downloadable code is very well organized and usable. The example code is easy to use, which is not always the case with BizTalk books.

All in all if you are considering learning BAM, this is by far the best option available.

Great textbook for wigmaking!

For anyone truly interested in actually making/building/repairing lace wigs, this book is a treasure! I was actually a little surprised that it goes into such detailed depth with regards to not only wigmaking, but all the other kinds of hairpieces and how they are made and when to use them(when working in theater or tv). The pictures are all clear, and well lit. There's even a few very short companion videos on an accompanying website showing knotting and sewing techniques....

The only thing i think would make this book better is an accompanying dvd to show more techniques in real time, and more websites/sources to actually buy tools and lace and hair from. The author makes references to one website in particular, which i visited, and there's very little actually on the website, sent them an email, to which i never received a reply. It can be hard to find all the tools/materials you need for wigmaking in one spot, so i've had to piece my kit together from several different places, including ebay. You've gotta shop around though, cuz several people sell the exact same things, some very reasonably, and some mark prices up dramatically to make a larger profit...
So in a nutshell, i would definitely recommend this book. It's like the "textbook" of wigmaking. The book, combined with the author's short vids, and user uploaded vids on youtube are all you need to learn to make/build/repair/knot lace wigs.

Amazing book! It has all about the different types of laces and hair and needles. It shows you how to take measurements when making custom wigs. It teaches you ventilating and wefting. Great facial hair chapter and styling chapter. Full of beautiful pictures! There's also a really cool section on building wigs with cage bases and finding jobs.

Absolutely fascinating -- the walk through of how to make wigs also indirectly explains why they are so ridiculously expensive to buy pre-made.. This book is very straightforward and methodical, and includes a lot of pictures to help visualize the techniques it explains. I would give it six stars if I could.

Good Buy

Bought as a gift for a 12 year old and I'm told he was excited to start making the planes. There are so many paper plane books it was hard to decide so I narrowed down to 3 and because of age, chose this one as it seemed like a good all around, easy to understand book for introductory of building paper airplanes. I was trying to find some interest for the kid so if he ends up liking this a lot, I might purchase the more in depth and core mature paper planes book for him in the future. Item arrived in a timely matter and good clean condition.

Many easy to make, cool planes

My son really loves this book. He is 9, and he can easily make many of the airplanes in here with no help from me. Some of them are simple, and some are more complicated, but all of them seem basically kid friendly. It is definitely easier than some of the more complex origami books that are made for kids. Besides, the planes look quite cool, so he is quite please with the finished product.
