About the Author
Mark Sawicki is a camera man, artist, and actor. He has had many roles in the world of film, from teaching visual effects for over 15 years at the UCLA extension, authoring video programs on the art of clay animation, and being an independent stop motion animator on several MTV videos. He won an Emmy Certificate for his contribution to the television series, Star Trek while working as a cameraman for Illusion Arts. He won a Clio for his camera work while at Celestial Mechanics Incorporated. Mark is currently a digital colorist and effects camera supervisor at Custom Film Effects. A few of his recent films include Premonition, The Black Dahlia, 40 Year Old Virgin, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Animating with Stop Motion Pro

Mark Sawicki has produced a very thorough and practical book to get someone started as a stop motion animator. Although the title implies that the content is very software orientated, the main body of the text is more about stop motion production with the software instruction being only a small part of it, which is a good approach. Subsequently, there is a very good balance between software instruction and tips and broader animation storytelling issues associated with stop motion production. To illustrate this, I particularly liked that the book did not go straight into explaining how to do something in Stop Motion Pro, with the minimum overview, as many software-centered books do. Instead, it explains how an effect was created traditionally, highlighting the draw backs encountered by the animator, then goes on to explain how Stop Motion Pro can be used to do the same effect without the analog drawbacks. The book covers choices regarding technology based on very clear information and effectively identifies less well used features of the program and shows how to be creative with these.
One slight disappointment was how little mention there was of British stop motion pioneers of the 1960s and 70s who inspired later, more well known animators, such as Sproxton and Lord and Nick Park; people like Oliver Postgate and the stop motion output of Gordon Murray Pictures.
Overall, the book covers everything a student or enthusiast would need to know about replacement, straight ahead and destructive animation techniques and how to fabricate, build, set up, shoot, edit and add sound with practical knowledge and application of the software. Processes cover an array of fabrication techniques starting with aluminum wire armatures moving on to ball and socket. The introduction to Stop Motion Pro is covered with enough detail to get the animator started with exercises that go on to fully explore the program. My students will be using this book in my class.

Wood describes his life at Microsoft as a marketing director for Australia and, later, China. Young business enthusiasts familiar with Steve Ballmer and Bill and Melinda Gates will be entertained by the glimpse into their respective management styles and by the author's efforts to pattern himself in their likeness. He also describes his lack of personal fulfillment and his eventual redirection, brought on by a visit to the mountains of Nepal. With vignettes from profitable fundraising activities for Room to Read, he documents how to successfully start up a nonprofit organization and how to sustain it. Originally named Books for Nepal, Wood's organization focused initially on providing books to the disadvantaged schools of Nepal, but eventually he expanded its scope (and renamed it) so as to include the building of schools, Tsunami relief, and educational programs for the children of Asia. Wow, what a story!

I ran across this book by accident, and I never heard of John Wood or his organization “Rooms to Read.” But wow, it’s a story worth reading. It touched my soul.

I wish I had his courage. This guy knew his current life style wasn’t working, so he did something about it without any real security to fall back on. Not only did he leave a well-paying position at Microsoft, but he also left the love of his life. She wanted to follow her heart in the corporate world, and he wanted to do service work in Nepal, which would give him the opportunity to help some of the poorest people in the world with an education. They still loved each other, but their desires and choices put them in different parts of the world. He just knew he had to be true to himself.

Many of his friends and family thought he was crazy and would regret making this decision, but he knew it was the right thing to do. John always wanted to purchase one of those beautiful homes in San Francisco overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. But after seven years, with all of his success at “Rooms to Read,” he shared that he still didn’t have a life’s partner, nor could he afford one of those beautiful homes overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. Nevertheless, he knew, he was right where he belonged.

I wish he had shared more about the staffing and training of those who taught and worked in these schools and libraries, but I’ll still give this book a five star rating.

If you love reading, this is your book!

The author does an excellent job of describing his moment of discovery of the fact that where you are born can, and probably will, determine your opportunities in life. Especially true in the poorest countries economically, though they may be rich in human capital. His realization that he can make an appreciable difference in the lives and futures of the children without a huge investment of time or money, just by asking others to join in, is both a revelation and a springboard to do more. The positive momentum that is created with the enthusiasm of all involved, and the explosive growth of what started as books for one school, begs the question of why not every child?

Reading the stories of people that he encountered, you get a sense of someone perhaps in the next town, rather than halfway around the world. And that is the story that John Wood is telling, that each of these children deserves a chance to learn, to get an education, to participate in making our world a better place for everyone. He has created the organization to make it happen, we just need to get on board and work together to ensure it does! If you can't imagine not being able to read, if you remember not wanting to put down that good book, if you were one who read by flashlight under the covers as a child, you will want to read this book and share it with others.

Strong personal story, but needs more context

John Wood went from a high-energy, GSD-focussed career at Microsoft to a high-energy, GSD-focussed charity founder. (GSD is an acronym for "Getting S*** Done", and the author uses the term several times.)

This is not so unusual: many successful business people, from Andrew Carnegie to Henry Ford to Bill Gates, have had "second act" careers as philanthropists. Wood simply started his early.

This book offers a first-person view of both careers with more chapters for the latter. I'm a fan of memoirs by successful people writing about their areas of expertise. This book delivers in full. In particular, I enjoyed the glimpses of Wood's network of high-energy, hyper-effective friends and colleagues. I aspire to be more like that.

On the downside, Wood writes as if he invented the idea of founding a charity. This is mostly okay, because this book is Wood's story. If you want more stories, read more books. However, Wood also neglects an important area: measuring and reporting results. Sometimes he mentions milestones such as number of libraries built, but he doesn't report anything such as improved scores on college entrance exams. In this age, charities should be accountable for results -- I'd like to see a chapter or two about that, with some actual stats.

On balance, though, I enjoyed this memoir about a go-getter who has built thousands of schools and libraries.

About the Author

Vikki F. Howard began her career working with families with infants and toddlers in Eastern Ohio.� Later she served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Jamaica, serving families with very young children and school aged children with disabilities.� As a professor at Gonzaga University, Dr. Howard collaborated with Dr. Williams to develop an ECSE program.� She is author of many articles, chapters and funded grants associated with infants, toddlers and preschoolers with disabilities and their families.� Currently, she teaches at the University of Montana Western where she directs the special education program and collaborates with tribal colleges in Montana to deliver special education pre-service education.

Betty Fry Williams has over 30 years teaching in schools with very young children with disabilities and in higher education.� She is professor of education at Whitworth University in Spokane Washington, where she chairs the Special Education program and teaches courses in early childhood special education.� Her body of professional work reflect her interests in behavior analysis, methods of teaching infants, toddlers and preschoolers with disabilities and autism.

Denielle Miller retired from public school teaching after 25 years of serving children with special needs.� She taught students ages 3-21. Denielle received her BS and MA from Montana State University-Billings. She is currently working for Side-by-Side K-12 Consulting and for the Office of Public Instruction as a consultant for the Montana Behavior Initiative (MBI) and Response to Intervention (RTI). In addition, she provides professional development to Headstart teachers on several of Montana’s Native American reservations. Denielle trains and assists schools in setting up school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports and creating literacy rich environments. She is an adjunct professor in the special education department at the U of M Western.

Estee Aiken has worked in early childhood education for more than a decade across numerous states. She has spent the last five years educating pre-service teachers, predominantly in preparation for careers in the field of early childhood. In addition to her interest in the education of very young children, she also works with and conducts research with gifted children. Estee currently teaches in the Education Department at the University of Montana Western.�

About the Author

Dr. Michael Lawrence Faulkner is the author of six books. He is a professor at the Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry University. He is a former U.S. Marine who spent 30 years in a variety of leadership and executive management positions with Fortune 500 firms and major nonprofit trade associations. He also helped his family run the family business before beginning his second career in academics. Michael is a member of MENSA, a Rotary International Fellow, and a Keller Master Teacher Award recipient. He holds a Silver Certification by the Toastmaster’s International. In addition to his Ph.D., Michael has earned two Master’s degrees: one from NYU and an MBA from NYIT.

Michelle Faulkner-Lunsford is a 2001 graduate of Middle Tennessee State University where she majored in English and minored in Writing. Mrs. Lunsford spent 10+ years in the world of advertising and marketing as an Account Manager and Director of Marketing and New Business Development, managing multimillion dollar accounts from male-enhancement medications to beer ads. In 2011, Michelle left the corporate world for the opportunity to raise her daughter.

I bought this book for some help for my resume. Wow, just when you think you have very word possible. you find a book that expands on that and more. I would recommend this book to anyone who may need their vocabulary expanded without mind wrecked by needless explorations of thesaurus.

I gave it 1 star only because there isn't an option for zero. Cumbersome. Confusing. Obscure words and very poor examples. I am a bit of a «wordie» and thought this would be a good addition to my library. It took very little time to realize how useless this book is.
