About the Author
A graduate of the University of Michigan, received her undergraduate degree in journalism with major supporting work in chemistry and psychology. Her graduate work was in geology and she has taught in public and private schools and at the university level. She has done writing and editing for the Encyclopaedia Britannica Education Corporation and for various professional journals and organizations. With James Fitzsimmons she edited New Service Development: Creating Memorable Experiences published in 2000 by Sage Publications. Her nonprofessional activities have included volunteer work for the Red Cross aquatics program and in wildlife rehabilitation. She has particular interests in the areas of environmental issues and the responsibilities of patients and physicians in health care.

Received a B.S.E. in industrial engineering from the University of Michigan, an MBA from Western Michigan University, and a Ph.D. with distinction from the University of California at Los Angeles. His research in the area of emergency ambulance location won the Stan Hardy Award in 1983 for the best paper published in the field of operations management. A computer program, referred to as CALL, has been used by major cities worldwide to plan emergency ambulance systems. Consulting assignments include the RAND Corporation; the U.S. Air Force; the cities of Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, Melbourne, and Auckland; the Texas comptroller; General Motors; La Quinta Motor Inns; Greyhound; TRICON Restaurants International; and McDonald’s. Teaching experience includes faculty appointments at the University of California at Los Angeles, California State University at Northridge, the University of New Mexico, Boston University Overseas Graduate Program, California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, and the Helsinki School of Economics and Business. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Michigan and has held industrial engineering positions at Corning Glass Works and Hughes Aircraft Company. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an officer in charge of base construction projects.

About the Author
Dougal Dixon was a geology student in college and now is a well-known writer specializing in the earth sciences. He took part in the 1985 and 1987 British Open University/Earthwatch expeditions to the Askja caldera in central Iceland. WHAT IS A PRACTICAL GEOLOGIST?

Geology -- the science of the Earth. It is a study that incorporates all the other sciences and binds them together in one all-embracing subject.

Literature gives us some guides. In Saint Ronan's Well by Sir Walter Scott, written in 1823, Meg Dodds, the prickly landlady of Cleikum Inn, refers to those of her guests who:

"rin uphill and down dale, knapping the chucky stanes to pieces wi' hammers, like sae mony road-makers run daft, to see how the world was made."

In A Study in Scarlet (1887), Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, speaking through Dr. Watson, lists Sherlock Holmes' accomplishments and his limitations. In the list we read:

"Knowledge of Geology -- Practical, but limited. Tells at a glance different soils from each other. After walks has shown me splashes upon his trousers, and told me by their colour and consistence in what part of London he had received them."

Here we have two aspects of the science of geology -- the academic and the utilitarian. The former represents knowledge for its own sake, while the latter knowledge is turned to some creative purpose. Both aspects involve practical work -- going out to find the knowledge in the first place.

Observational geology such as this has a long history. Greek scholars such as Pythagoras (c 580-500 BC) and Herodotus (c 485-425 BC) both noted the presence of fossil seashells high up in mountains and drew the conclusion that geographies were very different in times past. This early surge of interest in geology vanished during the Dark Ages and did not surface again in the West until the Renaissance in the 15th century. At this time technology and the arts began to blossom, and the necessity of supplying the raw materials for these new activities led to an interest in the formation of minerals. In 1556 the German mineralogist Georgius Agricola published De Re Metallica in which he describes the formation of metal ores in veins in a manner that was well ahead of his time.

The observations made over the next century or two led to some erroneous theories. The presence of crystals in some igneous rocks suggested to Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749-1817), Professor of Mining and Mineralogy at Freiberg, that all rocks had been deposited from solution as a vast primordial ocean had evaporated. This view -- the Neptunian view -- became geological orthodoxy.

The value of fieldwork

Throughout history the observations of the Earth's structure and composition have been misinterpreted, and it is only by diligent field work and increasingly precise experimentation that the more realistic theories have been developed.

One of the pioneers of utilitarian geology was English canal engineer William Smith (1769-1839). During the course of his work he realized that the different layers of rocks through which he excavated his ditches and tunnels could be identified by the kinds of fossils that they contained. Using this information, he was able to construct the first geological map and, with his book Strata Identified by Organized Fossils, initiated the science of stratigraphy.

Nowadays the classic study of geology has combined with such related subjects as meteorology, oceanography, astronomy, geophysics, and geochemistry, to become the all-embracing discipline of Earth Science. For the professionals, the practical work is done with highly sophisticated equipment. Drills penetrate the surface of the Earth and bore rock samples from deep within the crust. The structure of the underground rocks can be studied by setting off explosions and recording the patterns of reflected shock waves, analyzing the results by computer. Infra-red photography from aircraft and satellites can show chemical differences in vegetation that reveal the nature of the underlying rocks. Sonar waves bounced off the ocean floor can give resolute pictures of the landscape. Sensitive gauges can measure the electrical properties of soil and rocks, and determine if an exploitable water supply lies beneath. Instruments can detect tiny variations in the Earth's gravitational field which can suggest the presence of workable metal deposits. It is all a long way from hammers and mud stains.

With the great surge of 20th-century knowledge and the wealth of books on Earth Science -- at both the academic and the popular level -- it has become possible to learn all that is known about the nature and the workings of the Earth without moving from one's armchair. Yet practical geology for the amateur is far from dead. Studying the rocks as they outcrop and collecting new specimens will always add to the mounting knowledge of the Earth. And nothing can quite compare with the exhilaration of tramping up a deserted mountainside to observe the folds and faults in the exposed rock, or with the joy of splitting open a boulder to find a crystal of garnet or a trilobite fossil that has never before been exposed to the daylight.

Mark Cousins works as a composer and sound engineer (www.cousins-saunders.co.uk), as well as being a long-serving contributor to MusicTech magazine, where he writes the regular Logic Pro X column. Essential to Fully Understand What You Can Do With Logic Pro X

Mark Cousins, along with Russ Hepworth-Sawyer, bowled me over with Logic Pro 9. It was excellent, so I picked up Logic Pro X as soon as I became aware it was available. I was not disappointed. Logic Pro X is very well done, but don't expect simple explanations. The writing is clear and concise, and only for the serious, not those wanting to throw some beats at the wall while hoping they stick. Logic Pro is a comprehensive DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) that requires comprehensive explanations. Though Logic Pro 9 contained more than a few editorial errors, I've yet to find a mistake in Logic Pro X. Messrs. Cousins and Hepworth-Sawyer--each thoroughly ensconced in the British music industry as composer (Cousins), sound engineers, and producer (Hepworth-Sawyer)--deliver, in language that sparkles with precision, passion, and aha-I've-got-it-now clarity.

I simply love it! I've already gotten my money's worth in about two months since I use it almost every day. It's very easy to use once you learn how. Many things are self explanatory but I did get a book and video to help me with the more complicated stuff.

Change your relationship with stuff and finally kick the clutter habit!

I will admit to having a tortured relationship with stuff. I grew up in a cluttered house and married the King of Clutter (he's the type of person who'll open a credit card bill, pay it online, and then just leave the empty envelope, inserts, and bill itself randomly strewn on whatever surface happens to be nearby). I don't like the disorder of clutter, but dealing with it is such a soul-sucking experience that I haven't gotten very far. Many days I semi-wish the whole place would burn down and save me from having to deal with it.

Typically I'll catch an episode of Hoarders, fear that I'm one incapacitating injury away from being the focus of an episode (if I can't clean up all those strewn papers, they'll just pile up to the rafters, after all!), and then go through a stack of junk in a fit of unhappiness. Not the best way to deal with it all.

Marie Kondo's book is the opposite of that. It's a breath of fresh air and positive energy that brings real joy to the process of "tidying up."

I was only about halfway through before I tackled my clothes. She's right to begin there. My clothes are all mine (which also means that they're in nowhere near as terrible a state as other things in my house), so going through them affects only me and involves only my own feelings. Her advice may sound silly at first, but if your belongings inspire feelings of unhappiness, guilt, etc., her anthropomorphism of them can really help you change your viewpoint in a positive direction. I finished up with three bags for Goodwill and one for the garbage man. My drawers and closet, which were never very messy, are now exactly as I want them, and I feel fantastic!

My one quibble with her instructions has to do with folding. I've always disliked rolls of items. Instead, I fold so I can line things up like files. This makes it easy to pull things out without everything falling over. For my five-year-old, I fold his t-shirts so the front image is visible on the fold, then file them in the drawer so he can see exactly which shirt is which. (Here's an example: [...]) This works well for socks as well as t-shirts, pajamas, etc.

Most of her advice and content is really focused on a Japanese audience. There are many things in the book that won't translate as well culturally for a Western/American readership. For example, she suggests that you greet your home much as you would a Shinto shrine. That is likely to carry a different level of meaning for someone in Japan than in the U.S. Other references to spiritual practice and feng-shui are not likely to resonate the same way for an American audience. I even wonder if the preference for rolling clothes is cultural, since I have such a strong reaction against it and instead prefer folding and filing!

The examples in the book also tend toward the childless female. There is a lot of discussion of travel toiletries, but very little about kitchen utensils, toys, or other items found most often in a family home. The home workshop, which is a particular problem in my home, gets no mention at all. Don't Japanese people own countless drills, boxes of screws, and electrical tape?

But the reason for reading this book is not the specific advice about t-shirts and cupboards. It's about changing your relationship with the stuff you own. The tone of her book is so upbeat and positive, it's infectious. It's hard to keep reading it to the end, because you want to jump up and start using her methods immediately. I had little trouble adjusting her suggestions to match my own cultural perspective and physical home.

In the book she mentions that it'll take 6 months to fully tidy your home so that everything left inspires joy. I'm now a week in, and 6 months seems like hardly enough time to tackle all the junk in my house, but I can fully see how this can be a life-changing process.

True account of someone who thought she was tidy already

Marie Kondo says something to the effect of: If you read this book and feel as though it is you, then it is meant to be. Not a direct quote, but something that resignates with me as I read some of the negative reviews. This book spoke to me, it was truly magic. When I moved 9 months ago, I took approx 3 car loads of belongings to goodwill, thinking that I had done a darn good job of getting rid of unnecessary items. Yet still, my home continued to be rather cluttered and storage spaces felt messy no matter how much I tried to organize. I have read a multitude of books and articles, searched on Pinterest and other sites about organization. Read things on minimalism that were just unrealistic to me. I wanted to be more minimalist, but just couldn't get myself to only own 12 items in my kitchen. Nothing was quite right. Marie addresses all of these problems in her book and why they may or may not work. When I started reading I thought that I might be able to find a few things to discard and some new ways to organize the clutter I currently have. This was definitely, not the case. I purchased this book on Friday and have only tackled the category of clothing and 1 "catch all " bedroom I had because I had a guest coming to stay. I'm not even finished with those 2 places in my home and I have 2 large sized black garbage bags full, 4 smaller trash bags full, 1 medium sized box, and 3 of those reusable sized shopping bags and a pile of clothes still on the floor, all ready to leave my house. If you had asked me yesterday how many pairs of shoes I owned, I would have answered "maybe 20-25". When I took EVERY SINGLE shoe in my house and laid it out on the floor - not missing a single pair - it was eye opening, this is the magic of it. Taking a single category of item and laying it all out for you to truly see it. 59 pairs of shoes in all laid in front of me when I did this, some that I don't even remember purchasing or owning. Which is sad because I organized them all 9 months ago... I am happy to say I am down to 26 pairs right now. I even put 2 pairs that I had chosen to keep in the discard pile this morning after thinking "they are still new and cute" and then remembering why I never wore them after attempting to wear them to work (we didn't even make it out of the house before they were discarded). This book is definitely life changing magic. It helped me get past a ton of my emotions and just basic thoughts about my things and why I "needed" them or should just "keep" them whether I needed them or not, and gave me the permission I needed to discard them. If it speaks to you, enjoy it. If it does not speak to you, return it or donate it to someone it will speak to.

Truly life changing

I rarely write reviews, but this book truly sparked something in me that I feel compelled to share. The basic concept is to only surround yourself with things that spark joy. Decide what you want to keep, not necessarily what you want to throw away. I have bought other organization or purging books in hopes of getting my cluttered home in order. This book was the only one that I read all the way through and actually put into practice. The anthropomorphism in this book spoke to me for some reason. While I don't believe socks are alive, her concept of freeing socks in their tight, little bundles and letting them rest because they work hard for you makes perfect sense to me. In other words, don't stretch out your socks because you want them to last as long as possible. Care for your items as if they were "real" and not only will your items last longer, but you will feel better having done so. The book really is about being happier. Cleaning out your clutter and the process she describes is truly life changing in ways I cannot explain. I am about 2 weeks into my de cluttering and I am much happier in my home. I have donated and discarded over 6 large bags of items. While I usually feel guilt over letting objects go, her process and explanations have freed me of that. She has wonderful folding and storage techniques as well. My children and husband love the work I have done thus far and it is causing them to start the process on their items. An unexpected surprise for me (and total joy to my husband) is my newfound frugality while shopping. I used to be a borderline shopaholic. But now, I truly just buy things I want around me. I think differently as I shop. I know it's a change that will last. It's strange but true. Marie Kondo is not only an expert on the art of de cluttering, but she is also an expert on human behavior and how to change it. I am a believer in her methods, and fan. She's amazing. The book is well worth it.

Excellent Book

At 45 years old, I am not a young man, but I am just now finding my Way on the path. But I have very quickly realized that Tim Hogan's books (all of them) are "must have" tools for the kit of every craftsman and searcher. This book shines the light on who we were, who we are, and who we should be. It sits on the shelf of my home library along with Brother Hogan's other books, calling for me to read them again and again, so that I can share them with the world. Ben.

I nearly died when I was 19. That near death experience revealed to me a thread that could be traced among all of the worlds inner traditions. I have been heavily seeking every clue I can find about The Primordial Tradition since then. It is our duty, our responsibility to not let the knowledge of who we are, where we came from, and where we are going die. Brother Hogan is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to unearthing even the subtlest details of this tradition long forgotten by the world of the profane.

How do I get the most out of this Guidebook?

This Guidebook is the ultimate companion guide to Manual For Living: REALITY, A User s Guide to the Meaning of Life. Each section of this guidebook coincides with a chapter from REALITY, and you may choose to read the section in the book prior to doing the exercises. In actuality, you can use this guidebook any way you desire, as I prefer that you follow your truth and listen to your inner guidance. However, knowledge does not teach, but experience does, and this guidebook is designed to take you through experiences designed to reinvigorate your life. Remember, what you get out will be a direct reflection of what you put in. Some of the exercises may seem trivial but do them anyway. Every exercise will get you closer to what you truly desire.

Every daily exercise is broken into FIVE SECTIONS:

VIDEO: Everyone who purchases the Companion Guide will be given automatic access to a video for every lesson of the series.
REFERENCE: The Exercise & Meditation Companion Guide follows the structure of Manual For Living: REALITY. The reference section pulls pertinent and specific information as it relates to the goal for the day.
DAILY MANTRA: Ideally you will read this mantra first thing in the morning and will take it with you throughout the day either in your workbook, or by transcribing it on another sheet of paper.
EXERCISE / PRACTICE: Some exercises are more intricate than others, but they will all contribute to your overall well-being and happiness. Take the time to complete the exercise. Don t just do it in your head write it down. It s your workbook USE IT.

EVENING MEDITATION: The evening meditations are designed to be read and pondered as you drift off to sleep, allow the meditation to be your focused intention.

Enlightenment Personified

Through the companion "Exercise and Meditation Guidebook," readers are now encouraged to question, to learn, and to grow by applying what Seth teaches into life experiences. By simply reserving fifteen minutes a day to consider where they have been and where they are going, readers may, as Seth promises, reconnect to truth, live greatness in every waking moment, and find true happiness and fulfillment. What a blessing this guidebook is, a winner by all accounts.

Helpful Guide

I received a copy of the book through the LibraryThing.com as part of their Early Reviewer program.

If this book sounds similar to author's previous book "Manual for early living: Reality, A Users guide to the meaning of life", it is because the current book is a "work-book" format extension of the earlier book. Author has greater taken great pains to make the application of the concepts of previous book into real life situations. Videos from author's website complement the exercises.

My favorite part is the chapter on "Preliminary Life Inventory Worksheet" which allows the reader to assess his/her current status and thus facilitates adaptation of the overall lesson plan.

There are almost 100 lessons to learn, each with a Daily Exercise. Each daily exercise has a "Daily Mantra" to start the day with a particular personal mission. The daily exercise ends with a evening meditation which also allows the reader time for personal reflection. At the end of the book is the Life Inventory Worksheet again for comparison with the one reader filled out prior to starting the program.

Cultivate Your Spirit

I received a copy of the book through the Early Reviewer Program of LibraryThing.com (Murshid). After receiving it I dove right in and began ....... in the beginning it all felt a little dorky, writing down goals and listening to a video of someone I knew nothing about. And I would find myself too caught up in other things to do a daily exercise, a mantra and a meditation. After missing a day or two, I would simply start right where I had left off. In about three weeks I noticed how I actually found myself curious and looking forward to what was next. And by then I had also noticed I liked the way I was "processing" or thinking and feeling about things through my day as a direct result. I went back and did another Inventory as well as rewrote or expanded my goals. Watching a daily video online, writing in my programmed guidebook and also adding in the daily meditations (which I added into some I already had been using) all just flow through me so easily now. I am happy to say, it is working for me ....... and I'm very glad I stumbled across the Manual for Living: Reality - A User's Guide to the Meaning of Life and now this Guidebook.
