About the Author

About the Author

Eric Odoux graduated in biochemistry and had a career in Cirad (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development) since 1988. He successively worked on coffee, cocoa, aromatic plants and tropical fruits processing in Cameroun (and other West Africa Countries) and in France before to develop a research project on vanilla curing in 1996 in Reunion Island and Madagascar. His main research axis has focused on vanilla aroma development related to curing practices. He received his PhD degree in Food Sciences from University of Montpellier II (France) in 2004. His work led to research in partnership with industry, to consultancy reports and to scientific articles.

Michel Grisoni graduated in agronomy and holds a PhD degree in Plant pathology from Montpellier SupAgro (France). He has been conducting a carreer as agro-virologist for CIRAD (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development) since 1984 in Colombia, French Polynesia and Reunion Island. His research on vanilla focused primarilly on pests and diseases then moved towards the caracterization, preservation and development of genetic resources, in particular to improve the resistance of vanilla plants to diseases.

He is presently in charge of a research program on "Vanilla genetics and certification" in Reunion Island and curator of the Vanilla collection of the Center of Biological Resources (VATEL).

The Amazing Vanilla

When I chose this Vanilla book, I was looking for a way to make my own vanilla at home. To my astonishment this book took me to the beginning of the world of vanilla. It is very well written and extremely informative. How to make cooking vanilla was never discussed though.

About the Author
Wulfram Gerstner is Director of the Laboratory of Computational Neuroscience and a Professor of Life Sciences and Computer Science at the �cole Polytechnique F�d�rale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. He studied physics in Tubingen and Munich and holds a PhD from the Technical University of Munich. His research in computational neuroscience concentrates on models of spiking neurons and synaptic plasticity. He teaches computational neuroscience to physicists, computer scientists, mathematicians, and life scientists. He is a co-author of Spiking Neuron Models (Cambridge, 2002).

Werner M. Kistler received a Master's and PhD in physics from the Technical University of Munich. He previously worked as Assistant Professor in Rotterdam for computational neuroscience and he is the co-author of Spiking Neuron Models (Cambridge, 2002). He is now working in Munich as a patent attorney. His scientific contributions are related to spiking neuron models, synaptic plasticity, and network models of the cerebellum and the inferior olive.

Richard Naud holds a PhD in computational neuroscience from the EPFL in Switzerland and a Bachelor's degree in physics from McGill University, Canada. He has published several scientific articles and book chapters on the dynamics of neurons. He is now a postdoctoral researcher.

Liam Paninski is a Professor in the Department of Statistics at Columbia University and co-director of the Grossman Center for the Statistics of Mind. He is also a member of the Center for Theoretical Neuroscience, the Kavli Institute for Brain Science and the doctoral program in neurobiology and behavior. He holds a PhD in neuroscience from New York University and a Bachelor's from Brown University. His work focuses on neuron models, estimation methods, neural coding and neural decoding. He teaches courses on computational statistics, inference, and statistical analysis of neural data.

Morse and Feshbach two-volume text provide exhaustive description of physics, engineering, and mathematical science.

I have had Part II for decades. For economy I wanted a gently used copy of Morse and Feshbach text, Part I. The book I bought from amazon was in good shape and was at a reasonable cost. I have a few thousand different texts and this was one of the missing pieces of scientific completeness that has been acquired. The text was published first about 50 years ago but it is still one of several that are an essential components of the theory of physics and engineering and the mathematics thereof. For example, they discuss the discovery of another scientist that the relevant mathematics for a certain physical system has separable x, y, and z components in 13 different coordinate systems. That leads to special mathematical functions such as Bessel functions in one case. That ties together the common special functions of mathematical physics and engineering. Without the knowledge presented in comprehensive texts such as that of Morse and Feshbach the topic has little raison d' etra, reason for existence. This is an unusual text with none comparable. Feshbach Publishing has acquired the rights to this work from McGraw-Hill. Cambridge University Press did a terrific job reprinting the book using printing film supplied by McGraw-Hill.

Despite George Arfken's claim in 2002 that a paperback version was on it's way, no such version was ever planned. This book is used intensively over several decades by many people. I doubt that a paperback version would survive for long under such circumstances.

About the Author
Paulo S. R. Diniz was born in Niteroi, Brazil. He received the Electronics Engineer degree from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1978, the MSc degree from COPPE/UFRJ in 1981, and the PhD from Concordia University, Montreal, PQ, Canada, in 1984, all in electrical engineering. Since 1979, he has been with the undergraduate Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering at the UFRJ. He has also been with the graduate Program of Electrical Engineering at COPPE/UFRJ since 1984, where he is presently a Professor. He has also served as undergraduate course coordinator and as chairman of the graduate department. From January 1991 to July 1992, he was a visiting Research Associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria, Canada. In 2002 he served as Melchor Endowment Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Notre Dame, USA. Hehas taught short courses at numerous institutions around the world. His teaching and research interests are in analog and digital signal processing, adaptive signal processing, digital communications, wireless communications, multirate systems, stochastic processes and electronic circuits. He has published over 250 refereed papers in some of these areas, has written two books and has received awards for best papers and technical achievements. He is also a Fellow of IEEE (for fundamental contributions to the design and implementation of fixed and adaptive filters and electrical engineering education) and has served as associate editor for the following journals: IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Analog and Digital Signal Processing (1996 1999), IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (1999 2002) and Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing (1998 2002). He was a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society for the years 2000 to 2001 and served as distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2004.

An excellent book

The book by Prof. Diniz is indeed amongst the best on adaptive signal processing. Most of the fundamental concepts are well explained, suitable examples are given and practical applications are also discussed. The chapter on adaptive IIR filters is unique and still cannot be found in any other book. Moreover, solutions to the problems can be obtained by ftp, which is something very useful for students. Despite this is an excellent book (5 star), the price is ridiculous, as occurs with most titles from this publisher. If I were Prof. Diniz I would change from Kluwer Academic Publishers to a more competitive publisher.

A great book that describes the theory in a concise way.

Dr. Paulo Diniz has a unique view of the Adaptive Filtering field, due to years of extensive teaching experience. His book on Adaptive Filtering is a complete reference to the field, describing the theory in a concise way. The book develops the most important results in the field in less than 500 pages, including one chapter on IIR Adaptive Filtering - something that Haykin cannot beat.
The book is appealing to anyone who is interested in Adaptive Filtering and needs an extremely complete and concise reference. Highly recommended.

A sound reference

The book has a modern approach for adaptive filtering which make it more readable than some classic references. Due to my academic formation (I have a degree in computing science), it is much more palatable than Haykin's book (which is surely a classic). Also, it has a particularly useful chapter on IIR adaptive filtering, which makes this book unique (for example, Sayed's book is a great reference, but doesn't mention IIR filters). This book surely worth a read!

Q: What makes the Templar Chronicles series so interesting?

A: It's a combination of things, in my view. The series features modern Templar Knights acting as a secret combat squad for the Vatican, protecting mankind from supernatural threats and enemies. It is part urban fantasy series, part paranormal mystery series, and part supernatural or occult crime series. Think SWAT meets Supernatural mixed with The Walking Dead and you've got it in one!

Q: Is there a particular order that the book should be read in?

A: While each book can stand alone as a complete order, I do think readers will get more enjoyment out of them if they follow this sequence:

Second, many of the storylines in the Templar series feature action-oriented combat sequences similar to those in the Monster Hunter International or Jane Yellowrock series and this isn't typical for most urban fantasy. Third, unlike many other series on the market today, there isn't much romance here; if you want your hero or heroine hooking up with a hot vampire or shifter, you've definitely come to the wrong place.

Review for Infernal Games (A Templar Chronicles Urban Fantasy Adventure)

The Templar Chronicles were supposed to be a Trilogy, but popular demand convinced Mr. Nassise to write a fourth book. It is an awesome book. I am reading it again for the second time, and I just downloaded it yesterday. Big Kudos to Mr. Nassise and his publishers for keeping the story alive!

Just finished reading it for the third time. I just can't get enough of The Templar Chronicles. This book picks up after A Tear in the Sky and is a fine adventure. Cade Williams, the main character of The Templar Chronicles goes on a rogue mission to deal with the Necromancer. (Those of you familiar with Heretic will remember him as the main bad guy and an information source in A Tear in the Sky). Mr. Nassise uses this book to wrap up events in A Tear in the Sky and set the stage for more Cade adventures. The stark images of our world mirrored by the dessication in the Beyond draw the reader into the bleakness of a world where the Templars are the beacon of light and hope for us all. I highly recommend this book series to any Urban Fantasy reader. Start at the beginning and savor each and every moment with Cade and the Templars in Mr. Nassise's world.

I was thrilled that rather than stopping with the Templar Chronicles Trilogy as it was originally planned, Joseph Nassise continued the story! This is some of his best Templar writing. Cade going off on his own, planning, and trying to take out The Necromancer on his own. Oh yeah, he brought back Simon Logan, The Necromancer as a villain! LOVED IT! And it set the stage for a new set of adventures. I can't wait for the next one.

I love this series. I absolutely jumped for joy to follow Cade's story once again. Some minor editing errors caused, no doubt, by using spell checkers not humans, to validate the pages, annoyed me a bit but not enough to get in the way of my enjoyment of the story. Mr. Nassise did that to me all by himself by resorting to a stupid cliff hanger ending: good for tv but absolutely wrong for a novel. I am angry enough to lower the level of the book to two stars for this, to me, unprofessional treatment of a reader and consumer. I don't accept the concept of cutting a book in two so readers must pay twice.........make the book complete and charge a little more. very very disgusted with this methodology. I'm not sure I can trust this author not to pull this again so whether or not I choose to take another chance at another book is problematical.
