About the Author

Ion Boldea is professor emeritus of electrical engineering at the University Politehnica Timişoara, Romania. A life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Professor Boldea has worked, published, lectured, and consulted extensively on rotary and linear electric machines, drives, and maglevs for more than 40 years. He has received many accolades, including the IEEE Nikola Tesla Award (2015).

Syed A. Nasar (deceased) was James R. Boyd professor emeritus of electrical engineering at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, USA. A life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Professor Nasar received the IEEE Nikola Tesla Award (2000), among other accolades. His research efforts were focused on electric motors.

A welcome update

This book by Boldea and Nasar is a useful update of its previous edition. A big change include the two new chapters that have been added at the end and I particularly like that the authors have devoted one of these chapters to Multiphase electric machine drives which have been receiving increasing attention over the years.

This book as its predecessors is much suited to be used as a classroom book. Though basic operations of electrical machines are discussed, the book is certainly not a first book to learn electrical machines. Other books from the authors can help here. I also believe that some knowledge of power electronics is needed for this Boldea and Nasar's book. Matlab/Simulink codes are available for download from CRC Press website. Matlab/Simulink is very well present at most Universities but I would have preferred that the authors would have used a non-commercial software since not all readers will have access to the afore-mentioned software package.

Boldea and Nasar are two authors who write very well and are also very well known. This third edition is a welcome addition since its predecessor came out about a decade ago. Still, the basic materials haven't changed over the years and the authors have kept the same flavour as that of the earlier edition. The authors are accurate in their writing and they present fully-worked out examples throughout the text which are very helpful. A minus point though is that (final) numerical anaswers are not provided to the end-of-chapter problems.

If the reader is intimidated by Boldea and Nasar's book, I would suggest to get a copy of the book: "Power Electronics and Motor Drives: Advances and Trends" by Bimal K. Bose from Academic Press which is much thicker and which offers an alternative way of learning the subject.

Chester G. Starr is Bentley Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Michigan. The founding president of the Association of Ancient Historians, he is the author of the highly acclaimed A History of the Ancient World and over a dozen other books on the classical world.

Enjoyed

As this was the text book for a classical civilization course I took, I found that this book was pleasantly readable, unlike most college texts. It was detailed enough so that it almost read like a novel at times, yet covered over 1000 years in the history of Rome so that it served as a good knowledge base. In addition, I enjoyed the fact that it took the knowledge one step further and analyzed WHY certain events occured (eg. the fall of the Western Roman Empire and why the East survived). I find many history texts that simply focus on WHAT occured and don't get into more detail. I liked how Starr divided Roman History into four units, with each section revolving around a central and important figure in Roman history (Hannibal,Caesar,Hadrian,St. Augustine). I found the "Roman Life" sections after each Unit to be a little bland at times, but the sections that were good were well written to hold my interest. I am very intrigued with ancient Roman history, and I found this text to be a worthwhile book, for academics or leisure.

Worthwhile For A Small Book.
By SUPPORT THE ASPCA.
The author does a fair job of introducing Roman History to the beginer. The who, what, and why are actually addressed. Many of the significant people are lucidly described. The sections on the Etruscan infuence, Rome's legacy to the modern world, and Roman law on pgs.10-14,54-59,152-5 were what I found to be of crucial importance. Lastly, the further reading and pronunciation glossary were also helpful.

A User Friendly ETF Resource For Amateurs & Pros

I have spent the last month reading and using the Visual Guide to ETFs. The book is a valuable and user friendly resource on ETFs.

Author David Abner did a commendable job of balancing the accessibility of the material so that amateurs and professionals can gather value from it. Don't know what an ETF is or how it differs from a mutual fund or closed-end fund? This book has you covered. Need detailed instructions on using Bloomberg or other third party resources to perform individual ETF analysis? The book will guide you through the process.

Besides being accessible to all types of experience levels, another strength of the book is its format. As the title suggests, the Visual Guide to ETFs provides a healthy balance between the written and visual presentation of ETF knowledge. A reader may read the book traditionally, just use the illustrations and screenshots or combine the two in a multi layered approach - it's a custom experience for each reader. I found this presentation approach refreshing and a helpful way to reinforce concepts that may be best explained in more than one format. (i.e. written and visual)

The Visual Guide to ETFs is an informative and a useful ongoing reference for those interested in ETFs. I would recommend this engaging book to amateurs and professionals.

Technically oriented and not for beginners

This is an excellent book for those in the ETF industry. It is definitely not for the common ETF investor looking to build a portfolio of ETFs. There are a lot of technical trading language and terms which the common person will not understand. The book is thorough in discussing the trading aspect of ETFs and recommend it for ETF portfolio managers.

Great ETF Reference Guide

Dave Abner proves yet again that he is one of the most knowledgeable individuals in the ETF industry with his second book on ETFs. As an industry veteran, he has told the ETF story over and over again for institutional clients around the world. This is proven in his new book, as Abner does a great job of simplifying and explaining some complex concepts in the ETF industry that some of the largest institutions down to individual investors have been asking about for years. Concepts such as the Flash Crash, short interest, creation/redemption and ETF settlement.

As a trader in the ETF industry, I have used the book as not only a reference for myself, but for my institutional clients to go through and further their understanding of the ETF market. It has also been extremely helpful in training new employees not only in the ETF space, but how to utilize Bloomberg in their everyday tasks.

Involved, very scholarly work on the 20th Cent. MidEast

This is the sort of book I have been looking for a long time. I've read other books on the Middle East which purport to have a similar focus, but which are instead incomplete, notably "Sowing the Wind". This book, by contrast, maintains the focus rather carefully and provides a concise history of the whole region. It looks as if the book was written as a textbook for (I would presume) grad students studying the subject, but really any intelligent person can pick it up and learn a great deal.

An issue with a book like this is the tone of the work, how well the author writes. Kamrava isn't the second coming of Hemingway, but he's not too bad, either. The book is divided into two portions: first, a historical section that gives you an overview of the region's history, and second a topical section that looks at various issues that impact the region currently. The first section is very readable, the second less so (who actually enjoys reading about economics?). The author, however, does a good job (for the most part) of not sounding like a university professor telling you about something, though he does occasionally use words that are obscure, especially in terms of sub-regions of the Mid East.

I still enjoyed this book, thought I got a lot out of it, and would recommend it. The author seems to be a hair more optimistic about the prospects for peace and prosperity in the region than I am, but he makes a good case for his point of view, and the result is interesting.

Basically a pop-history text

First the writing style is easy to read and shifts time, place,and person reasonably well. But there is so much the author doesn't cover. The Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the Persian Gulf is what the author devotes most of his powers of deduction and induction on, making this way overpriced for its limited range of discourse. Someone new to Middle Eastern studies will benefit from this but not enough to be unable to answer the most basic questions about Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen (along with UAE is barely mentioned at all in the text.

I would recommend "The Government and Politics of the Middle East and North Africa" by David Long, over this book if a person is truly looking to get both scope and scale w/ their Middle Eastern text.

This Book Will Make Clear a Very Complex Topic

My brother recommended this book for me as a highly informative volume on modern middle eastern history. I must say that I am glad that he did. After reading it I felt that I gained a more clear view on the history of the middle east, was better able to understand current events and policies there and their ramifications, and got a decent sense of the social, political, and economic forces that continue to shape the region.

Here is how Kamrava has created such an effective book. First, Kamrava is always uses appropriate academic language and defines terms for the reader when new concepts are introduced. Complicated topics like nationalism, pan Arabism, and Islam are introduced, defined, and discussed in relation to the history being presented at each stage of the book. Kamrava is also effective in delineating the Arab, Muslim, and national identities and how each have grown and diminished, overlapped and separated during various periods in the middle east. Understanding these dynamics are critical to analyzing the middle east past and present.
If learning about the middle east and it's people from a socio-political perspective is a goal of yours, "The Modern Middle East: A Political History since the First World War" should be a stop along the way.

This book contains eight realistic mock criminal case files for use in pretrial advocacy, trial advocacy, and mock trial courses. This book is recommended for use in conjunction with the course book, Criminal Pretrial Advocacy, but may also be used as a stand-alone resource for practicing trial advocacy. The case files herein provide witness statements, photographs of physical evidence, police reports, charts and other demonstrative evidence, jury instructions, and additional materials that criminal prosecutors and defense attorneys would rely on to prepare a case for trial. These case files can be used for a variety of criminal pretrial litigation exercises, including: developing case theories; drafting and arguing motions; conducting pretrial and preliminary hearings; preparing witnesses for trial; and negotiating case settlements. The case files include a myriad of pretrial motion issues, such as search and seizure issues and suppressing defendants' statements. This book of mock trials can effectively be used to conduct complete trials, from motions in limine to closing arguments. The case files are an appropriate length for use in weekly or biweekly assignments. Each case file presents a set of facts that allows an able prosecutor to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt, or an effective defense attorney to raise a reasonable doubt. This book is intended for use in college and law school trial advocacy courses. About the authors: Terry Adamson has taught trial advocacy and pretrial advocacy classes at Pepperdine University School of Law for eighteen years and is one of the trial team coaches for Pepperdine's nationally acclaimed trial advocacy program. She is also a former Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney, and has prosecuted a wide range of cases. She was the co-prosecutor for the high-profile, thirteen month long jury trial known as the "Chinatown" case, in which one of the multiple murder victims was a police officer. Professor Adamson was a Malibu Superior Court Commissioner for eighteen years, presiding over every aspect of felony and misdemeanor cases. She is currently the Distinguished Jurist in Residence at Pepperdine University School of Law. Professor Adamson is a recipient of the David McKibbin Outstanding Teaching Award. H. Mitchell Caldwell teaches Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure as well as trial advocacy courses and serves as advisor of the law school's highly successful interschool trial teams. Before joining the Pepperdine faculty, he was a trial prosecutor in Santa Barbara and Riverside Counties. Professor Caldwell routinely represents condemned prisoners in the appeals of their death sentences before both the California Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has written extensively in the area of criminal procedure, trial advocacy, and the death penalty and is the co-author of Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury (1998), And the Walls Came Tumbling Down (2004) and The Devil's Advocates (Fall 2006). This popular series of books celebrates significant jury trials and the lawyers who tried the cases. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury was selected by the Los Angeles Times as a best non-fiction selection. Caldwell also co-authored The Art and Science of Trial Advocacy for use at the law school level. Professor Caldwell has received several teaching awards including the Luckman Distinguished Teaching Award and was the recipient of the Richard Jacobson Award as the nation's premier trial advocacy teacher in 2000.

What An Eye Opener!

As a "nice guy" myself, I could totally relate to Rom's pointers in what I've been doing wrong for decades. His advice for dating success is logical, intelligent, and doable. He seems to have keen insight into female and male nature. Unfortunately, it's too late for me, but if you're still a young guy (i.e. under 40), take Rom's advice, and, at the very least, women will hold you in higher esteem and not treat you with contempt, however veiled it might be.
