The book will surely make you think twice before putting any foreign substance into your body.

An important history

This edited history of Maine is a true masterpiece that explores many facets of this history of the state. The examinations of the lives of Native-Americans, the Wabnaki and others, the role of the French in Acadia and other stories are brought to life here in a series of chronological essays, that are neither obscure nor inundated with academic jargon. The later essays examine the role of Maine in the abolition of slavery, the civil war and the economy. Others discuss Maine's freedom from Massachusetts and the settling of the countryside. Separate sections detailing `further reading' are sometimes helpful, although sometimes they merely direct the reader to hard to find primary sources. The diversity of the essays and the thought that went into them is a joy. The inclusion of numerous maps is also very helpful. A very interesting book, designed initially as a reader or textbook, it is much more than that. It is a scholarly attempt to write the history of Maine and the use of essays in this case does not take away from the general subject.

Judd and his colleagues have produced the first full scholarly history of the State of Maine in almost a century. The book is really a series of integrated essays that focus on individual themes, such as pre-European history, statehood, industry and agriculture, tourism, and economics. The list of contributors is impressive. Most are faculty at Maine colleges and universities or are associated with cultural and historical institutions. The book is intended for use as a text; the breakdown of chapters along thematic lines allows a reader interested in a particular aspect of Maine history to focus on relevant topics. I recommend it for anyone who has an interest in Maine or New England history

A robust history...

"Maine: The Pine Tree State from Prehistory to the Present" is a scholarly compilation by the University of Maine, undertaken to provide what was in 1995 a modern history of the state. It is the product of many authors, some of who collaborated on specific chapters, and all of whom followed their particular academic specialty. The result is a generally very interesting portrait of Maine, from the arrival of the Paleo-Indians following the last Ice Age, up through the early 1990's. The colonial chapters and the first hundred years of statehood are covered in good detail by some fairly readable narratives. There is much here of interest: Maine's participation in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the Civil War; the cycles of its boom-and-bust resource-based economy; and its slow slide out of the mainstream of the country in the 20th Century. As the later chapters close on the present, they admittedly lose the advantage of historical perspective and are frankly not much better than stale news stories. Overall, however, this is a decent read. The 600 pages of text are supplemented by some nice maps but unfortunately few illustrations or photographs. Cautiously recommended to the reader with the time to invest in the topic and the book.

However, her story starts in occupied Paris, and she describes vividly her family's changing fortunes under the Germans and her early successes as a young ballerina in Paris before her move to Hollywood. Never less than frank, Caron talks about the many men in her life - including her second husband Peter Hall and Warren Beatty, with whom she had a two-year love affair; nor does she shrink from describing her more recent battles with alcoholism and depression and - movingly - her triumphant recovery and continuing success in television and films including Damage and Chocolat, and her adventures in converting an old warehouse in Burgundy into a lovely auberge. With friends that have included Jean Renoir, Vincent Minelli and Rudolf Nureyev, Leslie Caron's story is rich, colourful and entertaining. Leslie Caron now lives in Paris.

Great, concise guide to make research meaningful

This is a terrific little book. I say little only because it is concise and won't bog you down with unnecessary detail. It gets right to the point, and the value it delivers is anything but small.

There are literally dozens of market research techniques. Dr. Beall does a great job of explaining, in clear, direct language, which ones to use when, and how to use them to generate the strongest, most useful insights possible. That, after all, is the point of market research.

I've seen many research studies that were commissioned by large, sophisticated companies and that obviously were very expensive, and yet produced no actionable insights. Reading this book is a great way to make sure that doesn't happen to you. I'm sure it will be valuable to research providers, but I think it will be most valuable to users of market research, especially those who are about to commission a study. If you're in that position, this book will help you be an active participant in the research design, and will help ensure that you actually get the decision-making information you're paying for.

Only for people who have never been exposed to research.

This is an introduction into the idea of conducting research. It is not at all a guide. If you are looking for a how-to this is definitely not it. I was rather disappointed based upon the description. It's not a bad book if you are new to research concepts and don't know why you would conduct qualitative research over quantitative, but if you are looking for insight into specific techniques, you'd be better off buying a stat textbook or a book specialized on one aspect of research. Again, not a bad book for someone new to the field, but definitely not a guide.

An accessible introduction to market research methods

I use this book for a research methods course I teach at Cambridge College School of Management. This is a very BASIC Introduction to the subject of Market Research. Most marketing research textbooks are dense, complicated, and expensive. Students are likely to forget or not ever apply most of the concepts they read in a typical text book. Beall's book does not provide any information on statistics or measurement perse, but it is practical, accessible, wonderfully priced and a good introduction to concepts that students/readers are likely to remember long term.

This trend is prominently re?ected in many of the pub- cations in this volume, not only in a better understanding of the interplay of AD and certain mathematical paradigms, but in particular in the use of hierarchical AD approaches that judiciously employ general AD techniques in application-speci?c - gorithmic harnesses. In this context, the understanding of structures such as sparsity of derivatives, or generalizations of this concept like scarcity, plays a critical role, in particular for higher derivative computations.
