About the Author
Beatrice Chestnut is a practicing psychotherapist, coach, and business consultant based in San Francisco. She holds graduate degrees in communication studies and psychology and has been working with the Enneagam for over twenty-three years. An experienced teacher and group facilitator, she has taught at Northwestern University and trained students in interpersonal learning groups at Stanford University and the University of San Francisco’s Law School. She was the president of the International Enneagram Association (2006–2007) and founding co-editor of the IEA’s Enneagram Journal (2008–2009).

Great for more advanced Enneagram enthusiasts!

This is the third book I've purchased on the Enneagram, and I've definitely enjoyed it the most - however, I wouldn't recommend this book to beginners. If you're new to the Enneagram, I would start with Discovering Your Personality Type by Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson, which includes the Riso-Hudson Type Indicator - a pretty intensive test to determine your type - and a brief overview of the 9 personality archetypes. The Wisdom of the Enneagram is an excellent book for a more in-depth understanding of the personality types.

I ordered this book when I found that Riso and Hudson's books weren't giving me the depth of understanding that I wanted. Beatrice Chestnut's book builds off what Riso and Hudson do in the Wisdom of the Enneagram, but goes much more in-depth. If I didn't already have a lot of background knowledge, I might not have enjoyed this book as much as I did. I especially appreciated her examination of the subtypes, which she explains in great detail, and her explanation of the counter-types. Overall, an excellent read and purchase!

Beatrice Chestnut extends the theory and application of the Enneagram of personality with this book. She builds a clear and systematic framework for understanding the 27 subtypes as the 3x3x3 natural dimension for understanding the habits of mind we call our character. She explains the Enneagram's history and esoteric context well and is well placed herself in its modern lineage to offer personal insights as a long-time student, teacher, and practicing therapist. Chestnut's personable writing style is a good match for the task as she combines extensive (and annotated) research, first-person self descriptions, psychological theory and examples from great literature. (The stops on Homer's Odyssey track the obstacles each personality type confronts in becoming more self-aware, and vivid analogies from Dante's Inferno help underscore the Shadow side of each type.) The subtype sections show how basic human instinct (self-preservation/broad social/personal one-to-one) refines the passion in each Enneagram type into three different expressions - or 27 personalities. This book is not lightweight, and experienced Enneagram students might indulge the urge to skim some of the background theory. I say, So be it. The Complete Enneagram goes the extra mile to add both depth and breadth to a harmonic system for distinguishing personality from reality. And perhaps most importantly, Chestnut explains what we can choose to know about ourselves and others when we do so.

A great honoring and celebrating of the subtleties of the work of Claudio Naranjo

I so appreciate Bea's thorough and insightful approach to teaching the Enneagram through this book. I've studied the Enneagram for almost a decade, having worked with several different teachers. My personal perspective is that Claudio Naranjo's understanding of the 27 subtypes, which Bea aims to elucidate in this book, is a critical aspect to the model that many other Enneagram teachers have thrown aside for more simplified approaches to the 27 variations.

As a devoted student of Claudio Naranjo, I see Bea's book as a great honoring and celebration of the work of this primary innovator of the Enneagram, and as an executive coach, it has become one of the only Enneagram books I invite my clients to read.

Fantastic. Every time I thought that this book could not get any better, it did.

Other books of the spiritual journey are usually written in the first person, often a solitary voice such as Hank Wesselman's glorious Spiritwalker trilogy, or as the student one on one with the teacher.

By using the 3rd person, Ayani manages to give differing spiritual backgrounds and voices to the men of the Brotherhood as well as the heroine, Leah, and show them working energetically as a collective. (While introduced early on, the other women of the Sisterhood form more of a Dreamers Guild to hold spiritual space and have little other role.)

I found the 5th Dimensional work described to be especially resonate.

I actually read this book before its prequel. I was impressed. This is an interesting story with a good plot. Jessie is emotionally involved with her characters and is ovbiously personally invested in this tale, almost as if it is the telling of her own life story written as fiction. I will read her next book.

Carefully planted seeds

At the moment, this is Seth Godin’s latest book. It’s fully integrated with his previous works. It’s unlike his previous works in terms of presentation and a few major new insights.

The presentation was different and it felt different then Godin’s other books and his TED talks. This broadcast was produced in front of “an intimate live audience.”

Here’s how this performance made a difference: Godin was clearly relaxed and in particular, compassionate. He communicated with people who experience pain as one who also knows pain, and shared just enough about his painful experiences to convey compassion without turning the listeners’ attention to himself.

This book is integrated with Godin’s previous work. It discusses our need to make art, do work that matters, and ship. This is done in support of the new insights yet is accessible to both followers of his work and also new initiates.

Having listened to the book twice, I can say the new insights gave me the value that I require to recommend that others also make the purchase. Next are some examples of the new insights and what they mean to me.

Godin went much further in describing the force that author Steven Pressfield calls “The Resistance.” This is the thing in all of us that stops us from doing what we tell ourselves we will do. To me, Pressfield makes The Resistance seem like an oppositional outside force of evil that uses our weaknesses against us. Godin frames it as the small and most primitive part of our brain, the amygdala if I recall correctly, and also referred in our culture as our ‘lizard brain’, ‘reptile brain’, or ‘alligator brain.” Alligators (and crocodiles) are considered living dinosaurs. The average male alligator is 600 pounds yet with a brain weight of 9 grams.

Another new or much more developed insight has to do with our need to try something just a bit different and our simultaneous discomfort with taking a chance. Hence the book title, Leap First. In this thought process, when we do work that matters, we have the possibility to fail. We don’t feel safe if there’s a chance we may fail; our reptile brain always influences us to play it safe. It follows that those who fail most while continuing to improvise will have a better chance to win.

One of the most significant insights has to do with the analysis of what we do when we bargain with fear, or The Resistance, and what happens when we do the next thing related to our work. Godin, as always, used works by historically recognized thinkers from around the globe to build this analysis. I believe Godin broke new ground by the way he integrated knowledge about this set of phenomena.

I appreciate the palpable compassion with which insights were communicated. For somebody new to Godin, I suggest starting with this book.

In the first century, the mathematician-engineer Heron of Alexandria encountered I in a separate project, but fudged the arithmetic; medieval mathematicians stumbled upon the concept while grappling with the meaning of negative numbers, but dismissed their square roots as nonsense. By the time of Descartes, a theoretical use for these elusive square roots--now called "imaginary numbers"--was suspected, but efforts to solve them led to intense, bitter debates. The notorious i finally won acceptance and was put to use in complex analysis and theoretical physics in Napoleonic times.

Addressing readers with both a general and scholarly interest in mathematics, Nahin weaves into this narrative entertaining historical facts and mathematical discussions, including the application of complex numbers and functions to important problems, such as Kepler's laws of planetary motion and ac electrical circuits. At the very beginning of his book on i, the square root of minus one, Paul Nahin warns his readers: "An Imaginary Tale has a very strong historical component to it, but that does not mean it is a mathematical lightweight. But don't read too much into that either. It is *not* a scholarly tome meant to be read only by some mythical, elite group.... Large chunks of this book can, in fact, be read and understood by a high school senior who has paid attention to his or her teachers in the standard fare of pre-college courses. Still, it will be most accessible to the million or so who each year complete a college course in freshman calculus.... But when I need to do an integral, let me assure you I have not fallen to my knees in dumbstruck horror. And neither should you."

Nahin is a professor of electrical engineering at the University of New Hampshire; he has also written a number of science fiction short stories. His style is far more lively and humane than a mathematics textbook while covering much of the same ground. Great job by Prof. Nahin! Having gone through chapters 1-3, most of 6 and parts of chapters 4 and 7, I can highly recommend this to any non-mathematician who wants to know more about the history and math of i . Decent knowledge of calculus and basic trigonometry is recommended to get the most out of this book (and pencil&paper in some cases). Also bought the follow-up ("Dr Euler's famous formula") which will be next after completing this one.

Very in depth book with excellent description and explanations. Very insightful and answered questions I had for a long time. Only downside I would point out is it is certainty not for everyone as the cover sort of misleads. Much of it is too difficult to understand unless you have a decent background in math.

This is a very enjoyable book for people like me, physicist, who when studying complex analysis, marveled at things like Cauchy's residue theorem, but could not deepen the fun due to the scarce time during graduate studies. Thanks to the fascinating historical facts thoroughly researched by Nahin, it is also an excellent example of how science works in general, like onion layers getting on top of each other through time to build the whole piece.

This book has a nice progression from sketch to final drawings. Its nice to see different styles and techniques from multiple artists. It focuses on the right stuff. Some of the robots seem a bit "amateurish" but still a good reference.

For the advanced student

Beginners need not apply. If you are an advanced artist and/or looking to get into the field of digital art or computer games and need some challenging work, this might be a good book for you.

Also, I found very few of the pictures inspiring. Many look impossible, giant lumbering war machines balanced on tiny feet, 50's retro robots that didn't interest me, a micro robot made out of proteins, a Geisha robot in a long flowing dress which took up most of the picture and didn't make her look like a robot at all, etc.

It does start with some detailed pages of what advanced art supplies a professional might use, which is a nice addition.

I know how to draw, though I'm a beginner. If the book was more my level (not the books fault, really) or if the pictures were more inspiring and interesting (this part is subjective, of course) I might give it one more star.

This book is a good example of what can go wrong when you buy a book on Amazon. Had I flipped through it at the book store I would have known immediately that it wasn't for me.

this had alot more pics of some pretty cool robots and what they would look like today and in the past..I really dug the war robots both past and present but then there are a few that are more "george jetson" type ots like the "Assitant" and a few others..its a pretty good book..least it inspires the imagination to come up with a drawing or two of your own robots working off what this book offers...all in all..prob find better or just as good ideas in Epic or Heavy metal magazines off Ebay

What it means to be Celtic

The Celts have had a long and complex journey, both through history and myth, and this entry in the excellent Very Short Introduction series is a great place to start tracing that journey. Some historians question whether 'Celtic' is even a meaningful or useful term. Is it a modern invention? Who were, or are, these people or peoples we call 'Celts'? Cunliffe warns at the outset that finding reliable answers will not be easy, then proceeds to make it as easy as possible.

He views the subject from various angles - linguistic, archeological, Classical (the Roman and Greek accounts), ethnological - and gradually builds a coherent picture. His bias reflects the current orthodoxy that cultural influence spreads without the mass migrations that used to be assumed -- ideas and customs spread, not necessarily people. He encourages us to take a view from the Atlantic, and see the Celts as European peoples who traded along that seaboard. Some readers might wish for more detailed maps -- the author or publisher seems to assume that you will know which rivers are the Marne, Danube, etc.

This is an authoritative and accurate work, although I did spot one surprising blunder: On page 137, the ceremony of All Souls is described as taking place on October 31, preceding All Saints. In fact it follows All Saints, on November 2.

Cunliffe's prose is very readable, except that he has a fondness for litotes ("It is not unreasonable to suppose..." "It is not unlikely that..."). This can get not unirritating after a while.

A great deal of misinformation surrounds Celticism. It has become a tool for propagandists and nationalists. There is a certain amount of healthy debunking in this book, but the Celts emerge alive and well. Before I read it, I thought I was of Celtic descent on my mother's side. After reading it, I still do, but now I have some idea of what that means. If you want to know about the Celts, then you need to choose your sources with care, because - as Cunliffe hints - there are many 'lunatic fringe' publications out there. This is a safe place to start.

Exceptional !

For someone who wants a quick and dirty introduction yet up to date book on the ancient Celts I cannot recommend a better book. Although it is quite a short book it is highly superior to books havigng the three times the number of pages this book contains.

Although one may sometimes shy away from short books on complex topics like the Celts take heart for by placing yourself in the hands of Barry Cunliffe you are putting yourself in the hands of a master.

A winner!

Based on scholarship - but...

Finally, an introduction to the Celts based on scholarship and not wishful thinking. Popular books make the Celts out to be either the greatest heroes or the worst villains of Europe. This intro relies on archeology, linguistics (philology) and historical sources to tease out who the Celts were (and even IF they were). Origins, culture, migrations, art, and movements are covered. Modern treatment of the Celts is also covered, and how a new mythology has grown up around them. This overview provides a departure point for interested students to begin their studies with some solid grounding.

The reason for 4 stars vs 5 is the lack of comment on genetic studies. The author is clearly aware of research in this field but makes no real mention of it. For example, I look at a distribution map of haplogroup R1b and I see it apparently mirroring the present day distribution of "Celts". But I also recognize my inexpert tendency to draw these conclusions may not be scientifically warrantied. I would love to have read the author's comments on genetic investigations, and recommendations for further study. Genetic studies have something to offer, but how does it overlap the other disciplines?

Otherwise, great little book. Highly recommended.

Marc Delisle is a member of the MySQL Developers Guild - which regroups community developers - because of his involvement with phpMyAdmin. He started to contribute to this popular MySQL web interface in December 1998, when he made the first multi-language version. He has been actively involved with the phpMyAdmin project since May 2001 as a developer and project administrator. He has worked since 1980 at Coll�ge de Sherbrooke, Qu�bec, Canada, as an application programmer and network manager. He has also been teaching networking, security, Linux servers, and PHP/MySQL application development. In one of his classes, he was pleased to meet a phpMyAdmin user from Argentina.

It just kinda let down halfway through

This book starts off with a real bang, working you through the logic of how you would structure your data in a MySQL database. It works through two examples, a car dealership's needs for tracking the details about particular cars and their sales, and then a simplistic schema for storing airline flight information. About halfway through this book, you feel like you're really learning a lot of information, and then the second half just seems to mainly cough out some table definitions. I can't quite put my finger on exactly what went wrong about halfway through, but that's about the point where I felt like I stopped learning from this book and was just reading the remainder of what the author wanted to get regurgitated before he hit his page limit.
You probably won't come away from reading this book with any more confidence in your ability to structure the tables of a database than before you started reading it. Some good info. Overall - disappointing.

I found this to be very helpful

This book was very helpful in explaining the basic concepts. It is not an exhaustive manual on how to structure databases, but instead it is a great place to start learning.

Another element that I found valuable was how the author pointed out some common pitfalls in designing databases. Those are the kinds of things that only come by experience. If I hadn't read this book, I can see that there are several of the pitfalls that I would have fallen into.

I appreciated the many examples and illustrations. For some reason this author connected with my style of learning. It was fun to read!

My summary would be that this is a great place to start learning MySQL database design. It encompasses the basics and does a very good job explaining the concepts in plain and easy to understand language.

First aid for the psyche

As a therapist, I'm constantly looking out for helpful resources for clients. This book has quickly been added to my list. It so clearly explores the seven most common--and inevitable, if you're human!--psychological injuries and then provides specific "first aid" treatments for each:

1. Rejection--The emotional cuts and scrapes of daily life
Description:
Rejections can inflict four distinct emotional wounds, each of which might require some from of emotional first aid: lingering visceral pain, anger and aggressive urges, harm to self-esteem, and damage to feeling that we belong. (p. 17)
Treatments:
* Argue with self-criticism
* Revive your self-worth
* Replenish feelings of social connection
* Desensitize yourself

2. Loneliness--Relationship muscle weakens
Description:
Loneliness makes us constantly on guard, prepared for the disappointment and rejection we are sure will come. As a result, we miss opportunities to make social connections and behave in ways that push others away. (p. 53)
Treatments:
* Remove your negatively tinted glasses
* Identify your self-defeating behaviors
* Take on the other person's perspective
* Deepen your emotional bonds
* Create opportunities for social connection
* Adopt a best friend

3. Loss and Trauma--Walking on broken bones
Description:
Loss and trauma create four psychological wounds. They cause overwhelming emotional pain, they undermine our basic sense of identity and the roles we play in life, they destabilize our belief systems and our understanding of the world, and they challenge our ability to remain present and engaged in our most important relationships. (p. 85)

Description:

5. Rumination--Picking at emotional scabs
Description:
In order to break the self-reinforcing nature of ruminative thoughts and allow our wounds to heal, we must interrupt the cycle of rumination once it gets triggered, and we should weaken the urge to ruminate at the source by diminishing the intensity of the feelings that fuel it. We must also make efforts to monitor our relationships and to ease the emotional burden we might be placing on loved ones. (p. 154)

6. Failure--Emotional chest colds become psychological pneumonias
Description:
When we fail repeatedly or when we respond to failures in ways that set back our confidence, our self-esteem, and our chances of future success, we run the risk of allowing our emotional chest cold to turn into psychological pneumonia. Because much of the anxiety associated with failures can build upon itself, it is best to be prudent and apply psychological first aid treatment as soon as possible after meaningful or bothersome failures occur. (p. 189)

7. Low Self-Esteem--Weak emotional immune systems
Description:
Having low self-esteem weakens our emotional immune systems and inflicts three kinds of psychological wounds: it makes us more vulnerable to psychological injuries, it makes us dismissive of positive feedback and resistant to emotional nutrients, and it makes us feel unassertive and disempowered. (p. 232)

* Identify your strengths and affirm them
* Increase your tolerance for compliments
* Increase your personal empowerment
* Improve your self-control

Think of this book as first aid for the psyche. And, use as needed until symptoms subside.

Practical and completely achievable advice for handling emotional injuries

I love how this book 1) acknowledges that we need to address our emotional wounds with they happen and 2) uses practical examples and gives tangible step-by-step instructions to help deal with emotional injuries. It's not another book that leaves you with a stack of ways you *should* think and *should* react. Instead, you give it a read to learn the science -- then keep it handy (like a medicine cabinet) for when an injury happens. I've read somewhere around 10 books in this genre and this one by far stands out as the most practical and achievable guide to emotional health.

I really like this book. It is easy to read and is exactly what it claims, a guide to handling the many emotional challenges that arise through the course of our lives. It is very useful. It could even be kept with other first aid supplies.
