You can read my review of the other four Pinewood Derby books from Fox Chapel Publishing. What you're going to find are some of the coolest books EVER on cutting, drilling, painting, balancing, and racing a pinewood derby racer. So why another book? Glad you asked. While this new book certainly has some overlap with the other three books (mainly with advice on cutting and drilling), it's the new designs and techniques that make it a nice addition to the collection. The book uses the same cartoon character, Dash Derby, and he's got two new friends, Max Design and Professor Speed. These characters provide some fun and colorful antics to the discussions that include wheel balancing, building a test track, and using tungsten weights. There are a number of new car designs (my favorite has to be Quick Comet) - templates are provided for all of them so you can duplicate the shape and style of your favorite. Like the other Fox Chapel pinewood derby books, this one is in full color, offering super-detailed photos of the various aspects of creating a racer. I'm very impressed with the simple yet easy-to-follow instructions for using a variety of tools (some hand tools and a few machine tools). The book also demonstrates two commercially available products called Derby Worx Pro Body Tool and the Derby Worx Pro-Wheel Shaver XT - I wasn't aware of these tools but based on the photos, they appear to be providing some serious benefits with their machined bodies that are used as jigs. Pinewood Derby is going high-tech! The back cover talks about additional benefits of the book that include expert priming and painting instructions to give your car an automotive-quality finish and up-to-date materials and techniques for weighting and alignment. Building the Fastest Pinewood Derby Car is written by Troy Thorne and is 135 pages of full-color instructions.

Author Troy Thorne has followed up his Getting Started in Pinewood Derby publication with a new book, Building the Fastest Pinewood Derby Car. However, there was some advice that seemed questionable or outdated, and thus we recommended it with certain caveats. In December 2012, the same publisher released a revised title called Building the Fastest Pinewood Derby Car (BFPWDC). Authored by Meade's illustrator Troy Thorne, this new book admirably supersedes Meade's landmark work. Excellently Written Book

Having built pinewood derby cars with my boys the last couple of years, I realized I needed some help on the technical aspects when it came to speed. We kept winning for design, but never for speed.

I love the layout of the book, the writing style, flower, big pictures and graphics, and everything is logical and well thought through. This book is geared for the beginner, but has enough tips and tricks in the book to be of value to an experienced racer as well. It was a pleasure to read the book.

So while I haven't won a race for speed yet, that is no reflection on the book. It's simply a reflection on us as the builders and continuing to learn from our mistakes. Highly recommended.

Great Tips!

Great tips and ideas that I hadn't thought about when designing and building a PWD car with a young scout. Book has great pictures and walks you through tips and tricks with pictures and words. First time building a PWD car and don't think we would have had the success we did in the race without this book. Don't waste your time searching the internet for "tips and tricks," just buy this book. Will use it every year.

This is the 200 Level PWD Course You're Looking For

Great book. This is sort of like the updated version of the David Meade book, but addresses topic Meade only glosses over that are now the standard thinking on what makes a fast and consistent derby car. As with Thorne's other book, it's well illustrated/photographed to make it accessible to adults and kids. It also spends a fair amount of time on design/decoration. The book includes several very good templates for fast cars.

Unlike the Meade book, this book includes discussion on several techniques that are considered essential to having a competitive car ... rail riding, wheel boar prep, and what to look for in doing your alignment/testing. Additionally, this book addresses a broad set of weighting options (Tungsten, steel, and lead weights).

You could spend a year researching techniques and tricks on the various PWD message boards (like derbytalk.com) to go from 101 (meade's book) to 201 or just buy this book and follow the steps.

My favorite part of this book is a plan for a test track. I would've liked it more if the plan was for a 24' or 32' foot track with a traditional starting height (about 48"), but it's got enough information to get you started if that's how you want to go.

Perfect companion for the pediatric PT

Although another edition is in the works, this is a great companion for the pediatric PT. It's chock full of information and you can easily throw it in your bag. I'm sure when the next version is coming out, because I'm sorry to say the present version has several minor edit errors and discusses old assessment tools, but if you can wait, wait for the next version.

It has information on a variety of information that the novice and ever-learning PT will need access to.

This book is for doctors and not for parents!

I purchased this books, because my child have some minor physical developmental delays (don't crawl, don't stand) and I want to have additional info about PT.
However this book is definitely not for parents this is for doctors or medical students. This yellow book small in size but information is huge because of small font and have dictionary-reference style with list of many disorders and list of treatments and loaded with scientific-medical terms that I have no clue about (I'm engineer-technical type person).
I bought it used for $5, and for this money it was beneficial to see some pictures and minor reading etc. If I would pay huge price then it would be a waste.
I'm planning to gave this book to our PT doctor because it's little use for us, or if she have it then will try to gave it out for free.
Again it's may be very useful for specialist, but not for "medical illiterate people" like myself. :)

Good information, but still needs to be supplemented with Internet info

Having just returned from a trip to New Zealand, I found the book to be quite useful but lacking in a few things. For trip planning, background history, information about the country and important travel tips to know it is great. When we were driving around day to day it was less useful. We relied more on the internet for information about wineries, parks for kids, places to eat, and accommodations. There is just too much information that the book could never provide. Also, don't rely on the maps in the book to driving directions, they are not detailed enough outside of town. It is a good tool, but not the only tool you need for a successful vacation.

About the Author

RYU MURAKAMI was born in 1952. The only son of schoolteacher parents, he grew up in the port city of Sasebo in southwestern Japan. After graduating from a local high school, where he played the drums in a band called Coelacanth, he went to an art college in Tokyo. It was while studying there that he entered his first novel, Almost Transparent Blue, in a competition for new writers. Published in 1976, the book won a major literary award and sold over a million copies. Since then, he has worked for a publishing house, presented a weekly music and interview radio program, and hosted a TV talk show. His literary output includes two collections of stories Run, Takahashi (1985) and Topaz (1988), and the novel Coin Locker Babies (1980), which made its debut in English early in 1995. His roman a clef 69 appeared in English in 1993. He has also directed four movies based on his writing, causing a sensation at an Italian film festival when Tokyo Decadence was shown there in 1992. His latest film is set in the U.S. and Cuba.

"But maybe we'd feel something after all..."

It's 1976, and a group of Japanese teenagers living near an American airforce base indulge their appetites for drugs, alcohol and bi-curious group sex. Like most sensual quests for liberation and vision, these only lead to the annihilation of consciousness and a confusing desire to escape back into bourgeois life. Getting high is one thing. Connecting with reality is something else. In 126 pages of orgiastic indulgence, drug-induced catatonia and suicide attempts, there are three moments of transcendence in which Murakami's case is made: the memory of a beautiful piece of music; the experience of almost being killed by an aircraft taking off; and the narrator's climactic desire to communicate a personal vision of the world, himself and their possible unity. Murakami's call for connection and creativity in the face of mortality and post-war nihilism is a familiar one in twentieth-century literature, but the way he goes about it is refreshing. Firmly realist in his approach, Murakami stays on the surface. Sticking with the physical details he refuses to burrow into the minds of most of these youths where he might have interpreted or psychoanalyzed their inner lives for us. Ironically, this works. Their own halting attempts at self-expression are so much more poignant, and so much more credible for being vague and incomplete. If the bulk of this narrative strikes you as tedious, pointless, repetitive and occasionally appalling, then Murakami has succeeded in capturing the reality of a life devoted to escapism. It's only in such a context that the moments of incipient self-awareness and transcendence can have such a powerful resonance for these characters, and for the reader.

When Almost Transparent Blue came out in the late seventies, it was an important piece of literature and an important milestone in Japanese fiction. Almost Transparent Blue is not simply about drugs and sex; in fact the chilling but fascinating aspect of Murakami's writing style is how remarkably detached his protagonist is from the actions that he and the people around him are doing. This is a significant change from Coin Locker Babies, a book with similar themes, but much more proactive and passionate characters. This rift between what is real and surreal becomes more in focus as the story continues, and the book reaches its climax when the protagonist, in a self-induced semi-hallucinogenic state, realizes that the reality that exists in the surreal world (primary, the Bird's world) is much more real and urgent than the drugs and sex in the "real" world around him.
While this book is still relevant today, as there is still an unnamable but nevertheless constant pressure on the youth of Japan (and around the world), the context it exists in has changed quite a bit. Ryu's world is not quite the world of today, and ATB is beginning to show its age. Nevertheless, Almost Transparent Blue is a very enjoyable book, and by the end it becomes clear that it is a much deeper and mature book than first meets the eye.

Disturbing and beautiful!

This book won the Akutagawa Award, changed modern Japanese literature, and is a favorite of Japanese college students (...or so I hear). This book makes Requiem for a Dream look like Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Seriously some of the descriptions get pretty intense, but nonetheless retain some sort of elegance. Murakami puts graphic scenes of sex and drug use next to scenes of quiet reflection (watching rain, childhood memories) to create a sense of youthful hopelessness. However, taken in the proper context, this book will leave you uplifted rather than depressed. One of my favorites.
