About the Author

John Train founded Train, Smith Investment Counsel and is chairman of Montrose Advisors, both of New York. His bestselling books on investing include The Craft of Investing, The Money Masters, The New Money Masters, and The Midas Touch. He has written several hundred columns for The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, The New York Times, Harvard Magazine, The Financial Times, and other publications. He is a part-time director of two independent government agencies reporting directly to Congress and of several emerging market mutual funds. He lives in New York, spends summers in Maine, and travels frequently to Europe, Asia, and South America.

A good glimpse of the late 80s' guys (some of whom are still around)

Whenever I read and find worth in an investment book (or any other non-fiction work, for that matter), I like to see what other books the author recommends. I had just finished Pat Dorsey's "The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing" where he recommends this book's predecessor, viz. "The Money Masters" by John Train. Well, I couldn't get my grubby mitts on that, so I got its "sequel" instead. Note that about 3/7ths of the book consists of appendices (or appendixes, if you prefer).

The book contains an interesting hodgepodge of chapters. Frankly, I'd only heard of George Soros and Peter Lynch before reading this, but now I know about Jim "Up with commodities and China . . . and by the way, I don't like people" Rogers (lose the bowtie, man) and John Neff (who I just saw in a Jan. 2009 issue of "Fortune" magazine). Not only do you get brief biographies of each man, but you get insight into their investment philosophies and techniques.

By far the least comprehensible "guru" is George Soros. He's a genius, crazy, lucky or some combination of all three. Frankly, I had no idea what he was talking about most of the time and--if reviews of his "The Alchemy of Finance" are accurate--few others do, either.

At least when you read the Peter Lynch section, he doesn't constantly say "four-bagger," "ten-bagger" and "twenty-bagger" like he so often does in "One Up on Wall Street." As in that book, he talks about Dunkin' Donuts and companies that make caskets or breed rats for experimentation as good investments.

There are two interesting sections that don't discuss investment gurus per se. These are "Old Money" and "Managing Harvard's Money." The first talks about firms that manage rich people's money and how, over time, the investments tend to become safer over time (preserving existing capital rather than risking it) and how the freeloading, spoiled children of the rich are always pawing over Mom and Dad's loot. The other section is self-explanatory.

The conclusions of the book are seeping with sagacity, my fellow investing friends. Train considers the widely varying philosophies of the men he has interviewed, generates some observations and makes a few recommendations.

About the Author
Tom Williams is the founder of TradeGuider Systems Software (formerly Genie software) and initiator of the Volume Spread Analysis methodology- he was also a very successful syndicate trader in the U.S.Tom was introduced to day trading while working in Beverly Hills for a boss of an elite group of trading syndicates. These trading syndicates revealed their successful strategy to Tom. He gained their trust and confidence and soon became an established member of their organization. Tom began hand-drawing the charts that the pool would use to make their speculative attacks, and while doing this, he recognized a relationship between price movement, the volume, and where the price closed. The syndicates decided it was time to send Tom to the Wyckoff Chart Reading course in order for him to understand and finally get a firm grasp of exactly what was going on in the markets, especially when he drew these charts. Tom realized all the clues to make wining trades were in the charts, if you knew how to read them correctly. Williams retired from professional trading at the age of 40, taking up a number of commercial ventures during this period. Tom continued to trade as well, but became consumed with all the knowledge he had learned from the syndicate and it’s traders back in the United States. Tom's real ambition was to help traders operate in a more informed way, and this idea formed the basis of his software development company, Genie Software Ltd. He wanted to computerize the Wyckoff Method and the knowledge he had gained from that course to produce automated trading signals that did not have to rely on human intervention. Tom further developed Wyckoff's methodologies to create his own more potent methodology - Volume Spread Analysis - regularly referred to as "Wyckoff on Steroids"! Tom has spent many years refining the signals in this flagship product, VSA (The forerunner to TradeGuider) to make TradeGuider Software Systems what it is today. He also wrote two books that he self-published, “The Undeclared Secrets that Drive the Stock Market” and “Master the Markets”. Both books have now sold or been distributed to over 100,000 traders and investors worldwide. Timeless Classic

Roy Orbison said that good music is timeless.

Tom Williams's book is also timeless. There is beauty
in the simplicity in how he explains how supply and demand
is expressed via price and volume, and range of the bars.

Charts are easy to see. In color and large enough
to analyze over and over.

The pages started to fall out of the book but
that is much less of a problem than books that
have charts the size of a postage stamps.

Looks like Tradeguider has published Vol 4 of this series by Tom.
Hopefully, they will sell that book thru Amazon.

About the Author
Bronislaw Malinowski (1884-1942), Anglo-Polish anthropologist, was born in what was then Austrian Poland of a long line of Polish nobility and landed gentry. He was educated at the Polish University of Cracow, from which he received his doctorate in 1908 with the highest honors of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He also studied at the University of Leipzig and later went on to London, where from 1910 he was associated with the London School of Economics. From 1914 to 1918 Dr. Malinowski was a member of the Robert Mond Expedition to New Guinea and North Melanesia, and it was the research done on this expedition that was later published in Argonauts of the Western Pacific. In later years Dr. Malinowski taught at the University of London, at Cornell University, and at Yale University.

Is it Magic or Science or Religion?

Malinowski was a contemporary of Margaret Mead, but worked with a diff3ent set of Pacific Islanders. He discovered that the lines between the three fields were fluid and often overlapped. None of the three fields is black and white, there is a lot of gray at the borders. This is one of the most interesting books I've read. I highly recommend it.

What is the difference?

This is one of the most interesting books I have read. A fascinating book. Mzlinowski was a contemporary of Margaret Mead, but worked in a different island group. This book shows that magic science and religion have more in common than one would think. Malinowski shows how the islanders see the lines between each of the disciplines as being fuzzy rather than sharp.

This book can be incredibly boring because its written with a antiquated, prosaic tone. Malinowski's theories can at times seem transparent and na�ve, but this is what you would expect from a collection of essays written roughly 50 years ago. fantastic intro to meditation and Zen Buddhism

With how widespread Th�ch Nhất Hạnh's name is in the new age world, I completely misunderstood who he was and what he taught. Hanh's Miracle of Mindfulness is a series of translated letters from 1968 -- written while exiled from Vietnam -- instructing young monks overseas on meditation. His 'mindfulness' isn't the confusing buzzword it is today, but simply a way to inch towards the Buddhist idea of enlightenment.

I expected scam artistry akin to Eckhart Tolle or Deepak Chopra, not legitimate Buddhist teachings. There's still a few lines of woo-woo that don't mean anything (to me, at least), but the majority of Hanh's Buddhist ideas reject the nonsense of religious text and simply want the the reader to be self-aware: Recognize their emotions and the emotions of others; the causes of social strife and personal discomfort; the is-ness of all things.

It's a straight, beautiful series of meditations to wash away one's anxieties, starting with the most basic step in meditation: Be conscious of one's breathing. Focus on the act of breathing. Focus on any act one's doing and enjoy it -- walking, doing the dishes, the laundry -- because all moments in life could and should be enjoyable.

The book concludes with a useful step-by-step guide on each method of meditation without the letters' contexts -- a great reference for when one needs reminders.

Hanh's writing is succinct, and makes the reader feel beautiful without asking for anything in return. Highly recommended.

It's all about the breath.

Hanh teaches that the body and mind need full, unconditional rest, and that the only way to reach this state of restfulness is to meditate mindfully. Let go of everything, and become as a pebble thrown into the river, resting quietly on the river bed, as the gentle current washes over and around, aware but not disturbed.
Hanh discusses techniques for achieving this state of pure restfulness, beginning with sessions of noticing the breath, to developing a full day of mindfulness each week, to having the day of mindfulness seep over into the other days of the week.
Always the breath is there, available and non-judgemental, ready to lead one back into mindfulness, the brain being as a muscle, each act or exercise of coming back to mindfulness strengthening the process, so that next time it is easier, and soon habitual.
It is ok to be walking a path in the forest with someone, while being mindful. It may be difficult, but if one realized that one is walking a path in the forest; that one is talking with a friend; and that one is also being mindful about this, then one is indeed being mindful. I believe that Hanh would have used the term ‘being objective’ had it occurred to him.
The image of a pebble drifting towards, and resting on the sandy bottom, of a river is powerful, the river representing the passage of time and events. I now regularly present this image to yoga classes, sometimes at the beginning of class, sometimes at the end.
Hahn’s book was so moving that I checked online and found several others. I look forward to reading them also.

Live in the Present

I presently suffer from chronic stress over my financial situation, my career (or lack thereof), my age, etc.....I'm constantly either lamenting the choices I made in the past or fearing the future. Early on in this book, the Thich Nhat Hanh makes the point that when you live in the past and in the future, you lose the present, and therefore, that you're not really living. From Chapter 1 forward, there are exercises to help you live in a state of mindfulness...to live in the present moment. I'm only just beginning, and it's a difficult practice at first, but the moments of fulfillment and serenity are increasing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve the quality of his or her life.

About the Author
Anirban Basu, MS and PhD in Computer Science, is a qualified ISO 9001 Auditor, Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Consultant and a Six Sigma Master Black Belt. Dr. Basu started his career in Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata in 1979, and joined CDAC in 1989 to play a key role in design, development, performance analysis of India's first Supercomputer PARAM. In 1993, he set up the Advanced Computing Training School of CDAC. In 1995, he joined commercial software industry and worked in several reputed companies including Siemens Information Systems Ltd., Computer Associates, etc. at senior/top management positions. He is a Professor in Computer Science and Engineering and an accredited Research Supervisor and Examiner in several reputed universities for supervising and examining PhD theses on software engineering, cloud computing, big data and Green IT. He is also involved with providing Trainings and Consultancy to corporate clients. With more than 35 years of experience in academia, advanced research and development, commercial software industry, consultancy and corporate training, he has published/presented about 80 research papers in reputed national and international journals and in conference proceedings. He has co-authored five books and serves as a Member of the Editorial Board/Reviewer of several International Journals and General Chair of several national and international conferences.
