Great place to start studying for HSK

I used this book to prepare for the HSK exam.

The audio is clear, but the tracks should have been broken down more instead of one long audio track for the entire exam. Since I studied with the book certain sections at a time, I had to keep skipping forward to the correct place where I left off.

The quality of the paper is very good.

The practice exams in the book are VERY similar to what is on the actual exam. Using this book with my intro to Chinese book, I was able to pass the exam within 2 months.

I skipped straight to the level three test but I did use the book. It was useful and this is a great place to have a review of your Chinese. That said, it is all in pinyin and I would encourage new learners of the language to reach beyond that. For this reason, I gave it four stars, it isn't as reflective of the product itself as it is the test itself which carries over.

Extraordinary!

Luckhurst's cultural history of sf (since 1895) is an extraordinarily rich discussion of literature within its rich cultural contexts. I think it's the best such book available--very sophisticated, comprehensive, and scholarly, but so well-written that every fan of the genre will be able to read it easily. It contains many insights. The only weakness to point out is that the book is focused on anglophone lit exclusively, with only passing reference to other languages, film or tv. However, I cannot recommend the book with greater enthusiasm. Top Marks!

This third edition of the 1988 reference, full of the same back-to-basics philosophy of the earlier volumes, promises to once again serve as a lightning rod for lively discussion. Divided into chapters such as "The Bible" (the editors point out that, regardless of one's religion, it is impossible to be culturally literate without some Biblical knowledge, just as one needs to know the Koran to be literate in Arab culture), "Technology," "Idioms," "World Geography," "Mythology and Folklore" (which includes everything from Medusa to Mickey Mouse) and "Literature in English," the book is a compendium of thumbnail definitions of the bedrock items that make up society. This latest volume includes about 500 (out of nearly 7,000) new entries, 200 of which are in the science and technology chapters. Other entries have been revised and updated. It's entertaining, snappily written, extremely handy and reasonably inclusive (although there are bound to be readers who will find issue with Hirsch's well-known conservative ideologies). Although the book will be a godsend for home schoolers and teachers looking to give students a basic reference, ultimately it may be seen as a giant list, along the same lines as the much-debated list of essential literature that Harold Bloom included in The Western Canon. Arguments over it will probably not center on its stylistics, but on who or what the editors consider essential e.g., Allen Ginsburg made the cut; Jack Kerouac did not.

Initially published in 1988 and revised in 1993, this book is given an exciting update whose 6900 entries include 1000 revised entries and 500 new ones, 200 of which are in science and technology alone. Given the book's aim to define "common cultural knowledge rather than to present a lexicon of words or topics," a revision was sorely needed; when the second edition appeared, almost no one knew what a web page was. The text is divided into sections by subject-e.g., fine arts, world politics, life sciences-each with a brief introduction; access is also aided by a thorough index. The entries themselves are complete, concise, and clearly written as well as extensively and effectively cross-referenced. All that need be said about this first-rate reference is that it is well written, well researched, and well worth the money. Students, general readers, trivia buffs, and those who like to have a great reference work at their fingertips will find it informative, useful, and just plain fun. Highly recommended.

The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy is the most recent list of "background knowledge needed to be able to read with understanding." Hirsch published Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know (Houghton) in 1987, the Dictionary of Cultural Literacy in 1988 (Houghton), and a revised Dictionary in 1993 (Houghton). He believes that "shared information is the foundation of our public discourse . . . that allows us to comprehend our daily newspapers and news reports, to understand our peers and leaders, and even to share our jokes. Cultural literacy is the context of what we say and read." The compilers selected items "likely to be known by a broad majority of literate Americans" and of "lasting significance."

Cultural Literacy was praised as the most important book on education to appear in years but also criticized as being elitist and conservative, with most of the entries in use for at least 100 years and an emphasis on print media. The authors produced the third edition "to keep up with the changes in American culture," adding 500 new entries, 200 in the "Science and Technology" section, and updating 1,000 others. Internet and computer-related terms (FAQ, laptop, snail mail) are among the most important additions.

The 7,000 entries are arranged alphabetically within 23 sections, including "The Bible," "Fine Arts," "World and American History," and "Physical, Earth, and Life Sciences." Entries include brief definitions and cultural associations, such as "an olive branch is now regarded as a sign of peace, as is the dove."

The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy is a tool for assessing cultural literacy, not a first choice for definitions of terms. It should not be compared with other specialized dictionaries, especially popular culture compendia. In it, Java is an island in Indonesia, not programming language or Starbucks staple, and Pluto is a planet and the god of the underworld, not a cartoon dog. Popular with trivia fans and familiar to educators, this resource will be requested in academic, high-school, and public libraries. RBB

An unlikely coffee table book.

The pictures aren't flashy. The text isn't eloquent. But, this book delivers exactly what the subtitle suggests, "What Every American Needs to Know." Full of up-to-date and well-organized content, the book provides answers to everyday questions, in addition to being a source for research. (Writers of college papers will find this a very useful tool.)
Although I am not one to pick up a dictionary and read through it, I typically cover several pages at a time when I reference this book. While reading the text of one piece, I often find myself intrigued about, and looking up, another topic.
Every home should have a copy of this book!

A great tool to learn English & Culture.

I am a foreign citizen living in the US for about 4 years for graduate level degree in the US. Culture as well as language are the biggest obstacles of my life in the US. I overcame the basic survival and class language barrier after living 2-3 years, but the cultural barrier with combined with conversational language is very challenging. Not only for more socializing but also more nature English writing and speacking, I worked hard, and Culturacy Dictionary helps me a lot. It includes expressions from various areas, e.g. bible, literature, idiom, etc. During the reading or watching TV, I can understand better the implications and expressions rooted from relgion, history, literature, and other areas of culture.

I use this dictionary with several ways. First, just read the page I am intersted in. Second, I consult it during my writing to find better expression, and do more research to understand the background better via internet. Third, play game with this book with my American Classmates - in fact, this helps me the most. They explain what is not written in the dictionary, and this is the way I can acquire the knowledge of the expression easily and last long in my brain.

This dictionary is wonderful, I think, for both for navtive and non-native. Non natives can upgrade their English level with cultural understanding, and natives can be more sophisticated using their languages. It is a great tool, and I am happy to find it!

SECRETS TO STARTING & RUNNING YOUR OWN BOOKKEEPING BUSINESS...

I practically read this book in a day. Very good book.

It gave a lot of helpful detailed information on what to do and even putting different colored folder for different jobs for the client. I thought that was helpful as well as doing other jobs for your client besides bookkeeping. I have read that before and have taken that into consideration. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone that wants to start one. But since I have an Accounting Degree and know the ins and outs of the field, I have a little bit of an advancement than people that don't. So, please educate yourself before jumping right into it.

I bought Quickbooks Pro to help me understand what the program was and to see how it works. It works very easy but just know whats behind it. I think Quickbooks over Peachtree is better any day. I tried Peachtree years ago and I did not like it. But I REALLY like Quickbooks, but it also depends on the industry. Quickbooks doesn't seem to handle inventory from what I'm told. But always do your research.

I recently started the difficult process of building my own bkpg business. I do have a bachelors degree in business, but I'm no CPA. Most of my professional experience dealt with operations in a blue collar industry, however, much of what I did daily had a high emphasis on bookkeeping or at least viewing P&L and our general ledger. Phone calls to the company Comptroller were normal in my business week.

I can't believe it took me this long to figure out my biggest strength in the marketplace. That said, my biggest problem in growing my business has been the lack of access to information, all different kinds really. Sylvia Jaumann has the most competent information I have seen about starting a bookkeeping business everywhere I have looked. If there's one thing I have found out, it's that most bookkeepers don't want to share how they do what they do.

Before now, I have been wanting to bang my head against the wall from frustration. Two days ago started out as a nightmare, and began to look like it would end that way too. About 10 phone tags back and forth and a dozen text messages, plus getting lost multiple times out here in the "country" back roads of Texas. Over 150 miles later & walking through my front door last night after 1:00 am, I can PROUDLY share with you that I've picked up my FIRST real client!!!!! From pitch to close - and this one isn't one of my buddies, like all my other clients.

I actually even e-mailed Sylvia Juamann, and she replied to me! I thought that was pretty cool. A companion I wont be without when I start freelancing!!

I have just received Sylvia Jaumann's book Secrets to Starting & Running Your Own Bookkeeping Business- Freelance Bookkeeping at Home. When I first picked up the book out of the Amazon box I thought oh no this little thing cant have much to tell me I dont already know as I have run another small business (publishing) in the past. But to my surprise I was half way through the book before I knew it with intent to reread and reread as there are lots of helpful tips and information about not only what you really NEED to do to start freelancing your bookkeeping skills but also lots of tips that you dont need to do but if you use them they will certainly keep you well organized and help you KEEP your clients. What to look out for in choosing your clients and helpful information on choosing and setting your rates, raising your rates, tracking billable hours, a helpful filing system for both hard copy and computerized files, a reminder system for government remittances.

I could go on and on about all the great information written in this book including Sylvia's downloadable forms which are very helpful. She also gives some good advice, and a realistic way to quit your day job, if you can get your boss to agree to a few things, as well as a business plan and where to spend your money marketing your business.

This book is definitely something to keep at your side while you plan and set up your home business in bookkeeping. Im sure I wont use all the suggestions but Im sure to use quite a bit of the information provided. I would highly recommend this book to anybody who asked about it and I am real finicky about informational books. I want real information that I can put to use not just a book on what someone else has done. This book will give you information, with great detail, on what has been tried in real life and what has worked to what hasnt worked to help you get what you want and to avoid unwanted situations.

If your serious enough, buy this book! You wont be disapointed!

About the Author

James M. Rubenstein received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. He is Professor of Geography at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, where he teaches urban and human geography, and where he helped develop the new Sustainability co-major in the Institute for the Environment & Sustainability.

In addition to The Cultural Landscape , he is also the author of Pearson’s Contemporary Human Geography , Second Edition and Introduction to Contemporary Geography . He is often invited to give talks and presentations at colleges, high schools, and professional meetings.� Rubenstein works as a regional consultant for the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank and he conducts research in the automotive industry. He is often interviewed by the media on automotive and economic issues, and has published three books on the subject: The Changing U.S. Auto Industry: A Geographical Analysis (Routledge); Making and Selling Cars: Innovation and Change in the U.S. Auto Industry (The Johns Hopkins University Press); and Who Really Made Your Car? Restructuring and Geographic Change in the Auto Industry (W.E. Upjohn Institute, with Thomas Klier).

Great for AP Human Geography

Currently I am taking an AP Human Geography class in my high school and this is the book we were assigned to buy. This book has wonderful charts and pictures along with descriptions. This book goes into depth and doesn't only touch the surface. I recomend this book to AP Human Geography teachers and students!

what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth ...

This book is a textbook for AP Human Geography, and as a teacher I have to say that it should be more balanced in its presentation. For example, on the chapter on Population, it compares the population policy of China (the one child policy) to that of India. It refers to China's one child policy as "successful" without mentioning that there are six million MISSING girls in China as a result of this brutal policy. It refers to India's population policy as less successful, when in fact India has a much higher respect for Faith and family. That is very concerning.

My students talked about these slanted views throughout the year, so this bias is noticed. We tried to add to the curriculum with inspriational stories which add so much when studying developing nations. For example, when studying about the World Bank and the IMF, what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth on Grameen Bank, which was founded by a professor from Tennessee who realized that he could free an entire village from economic slavery - with less than a $30 investment. Thus began the success story in empowering villages -and Muhammad Yunus thus created a bank owned by the women of small villages empowering other women. Compare that to the failure rates of the IMF and the World Bank! We need textbooks that inspire with what individuals can do in this world, and to create these textbooks would modify the feeling that too many people have that the problems of the world are so great that only big government can solve them. Better textbooks would be a good place to start.

solid textbook

This text is an easy read for both the eyes and brain due to the font choice and layout. Illustrations and photographs are visually pleasing as well. I am a pseudogeography junkie with a passion for the human experience, development, and social justice issues around the globe. This text worked well in these areas of my learning experience. A social work major is responsible for the content of this review! Well Done, however, a bit on the expensive side.
