The author is not fluent in English

This book is ridiculous. I read the titles of the "model essays" on the Kindle sample. Almost every single item contains at least one significant error in English. The author of this book is NOT qualified to write a book for TOEFL students.

Please do not buy this book; it will make your English worse, not better.

The kinds of errors the author makes would be obvious to any native speaker of English, by the way. Here's an example from this book:

"Serious movie that designed make you think is better than watch fun movie that designed primarily for fun."

The above is a mess. It has multiple problems. Here is a sample of the problems:

1. "Serious movie that designed make you think" should be "A serious movie that is intended to make you think . . ." (or: "Serious movies that are intended to make you think . . . ")
2. If the writer wants to compare "watching" movies, he should start with "watching" (not "watch"). For example, he could have started this way: "Watching serious movies that are intended to make you think is better than watching . . . "
3. "Designed" should be "intended."
4. "Fun" should not be repeated -- a "fun movie . . . for fun" is too repetitive; it sounds stupid.

I could go on. In fact, I could use David Min's sentences as samples of errors for students to correct. As suggestions for students seeking to write "model essays," however, Min's "models" are mostly disasters. They will harm you, not help you. The truth is that Min writes like a weak high school student.

Here's the bottom line: If you want to improve your English, do not buy this book. And if someone gives it to you, throw it in the trash, where it belongs.

Prete shows that suspicion and distrust on the part of both sides of the alliance continued to inform relations well after the circumstances creating them had changed. An excellent and thought-provoking military history, especially recommended for college library collections

Strategy and Command: The Anglo-French Coalition on the Western Front, 1914 is the first of three projected volumes examining the First World War from the French point of view (as opposed to the more ubiquitous British perspective), from the inception of hostilities to 1915, when trench warfare changed the world forever. Drawing heavily upon new information from French public and private archives, including private diaries, Strategy and Command reveals that suspicion and distrust were omnipresent on both sides of the alliance, and that both sides had drastic and fundamental differences in their strategies. An excellent and thought-provoking military history, especially recommended for college library collections.

This book reprints the six easiest chapters from Feynman's celebrated Lectures on Physics (LJ 12/15/63), which the Nobel Prize-winning scientist delivered from 1961 to 1963 at the California Institute of Technology. Intended for as wide an audience as possible, these chapters are primarily qualitative in nature, with a minimum of formal mathematics. They discuss atoms, basic physics, the relation of physics to other sciences, the conservation of energy, gravitation, and quantum behavior. While this informative work provides a relevant historical perspective on the essentials of physics, the result is somewhat superficial. Nonetheless, because Lectures on Physics is out of print and because the information is still relevant, reprinting these specific chapters was probably a realistic move. Richard P. Feynman was Richard Chace Tolman Professor of Theoretical Physics at the California Institute of Technology. A few more tries like this and even I will begin to get it

If you have been reading the reviews of this book you might be beginning to suspect that this book is a great place to start. You're right. Feynman uses easy to understand examples and relates them very well to his subject matter.
After I saw the 10 year anniversary edition to "A Breif History of Time" I felt guilty and I read my 10 year old copy. I should have read this book first. I would have been much better prepared to read the other. Both books were great but Feynman did a better job of relating the scientific to the mundane.

Addresses those nagging questions I've always had

I took three semesters of physics to complete my undergraduate degree; I'll never forget the dumbfounded look on my instructor's face when we were studying electrical force and I asked, "so, why *do* protons attract electrons, anyway?" The professor sputtered and said, "it's just a force of the universe. Shut up and stop asking stupid questions." Or when the instructor presented Newton's third law ("every action has an equal and opposite reaction"), and I asked, "So why is it that when I push against a wall it doesn't push back and fall apart?" The answer was, "Well, the wall doesn't fall apart does it? So that's that. Shut up and stop asking stupid questions." Dr. Feynman addresses *exactly* these types of questions, over and over again. (If the earth and the moon are attracted to each other, why don't they crash into each other? Why are snowflakes shaped the way they are? Why does blowing on soup cool it down?) I only wish this book had been 1300 pages rather than 130 - every page answered some nagging problem I've had with the physics explanation of the universe. I don't think you can learn physics from this book, but you can get excited enough about it to start digging around and discovering more, like I did.

Reads very quickly

I have heard of Feynman's collection of physics lectures for a long time and had intended reading them "one of these days" but never seemed to get to it. When a couple of friends and I formed a book club to discuss science and other types of expository prose, and one of them suggested this book, I decided "this is the day."

In reading Six Easy Pieces, I had a distinct sympathy with Feynman's undergraduate students. The man's mind must have run at the speed of light, ideas just firing off like gunshots. For a decade that had only reel to reel tape recorders, and big ones at that, the only resort for the student taking notes would have to have been a strong skill at shorthand.

I had expected a more difficult and thorough book, but the author presents a very simple, almost too brief, analysis of basic physics in this volume, which is a section of a larger text based on his lectures. In it he illustrates the close association, even a basic underpinning, of other sciences by physics. He notes relationships with earth sciences, particularly geology, with astronomy/cosmology, biology, and chemistry in particular. What he doesn't do is go into very great detail on how these areas relate to one another, his discussion of chemistry being the most thorough of them.

The book is very short, and the author spends much of it on the history and relationships of physics as a science. It is more like a general introduction written to preface material presented later in the course. He does a nice job of explaining the issue of particle/wave duality in electromagnetic and other waves in the final chapter of the book, which also suggests that the bulk of the book is "introductory" in nature and that more is to come later.

Athough the author presents some equations and graphs, those who are math-shy needn't be daunted; they are straight forward and helpful in understanding the points the author makes. Furthermore, Feynman's narative style goes very rapidly. He jumps from topic to topic, intercalating brief stories and amusing comments to put his message across in an entertaining manner, rather than in a ponderous discussion or chalk boards full of formulae.

Although the reader who has no physics background may enjoy learning something of the field through this book, I suspect those with a science background may find one of the more recent books on the subject more informative.

About the Author
Wayne K. Hoy, former chair of the department of educational administration, associate dean of academic affairs, and distinguished professor at Rutgers University, is now the Novice Fawcett Chair in Educational Administration at The Ohio State University. Professor Hoy received his B. A. from Lock Haven State College in 1959 and his D. Ed. from The Pennsylvania State University in 1965. His primary research interests are theory and research in administration, the sociology of organizations, and the social psychology of administration. In 1973, he received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching from Rutgers University; in 1987, he was given the Alumni Award for Professional Research from the Graduate School of Education; in 1991, he received the Excellence in Education Award from The Pennsylvania State University; and in 1992, he was given the Meritorious Research Award from the Eastern Educational Research Association. He is past secretary-treasurer of the National Conference of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA) and is past president of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA). He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Educational Administration Quarterly, Journal of Educational Administration, the McGill Journal of Education, and the Journal of Research and Development in Education. Professor Hoy is coauthor with Professors D. J. Willower and T. L. Eidell of The School and Pupil Control Ideology (1967), with Patrick Forsyth of Effective Supervision: Theory into Practice (1986), and with John Tarter and Robert Kottkamp, Open Schools-Healthy Schools: Measuring Organizational Climate (1991). He has been described by the Australian Institute of Educational Administration as one of "the world's most widely read authors in the field of Educational Administration." Professor Hoy has written more than a hundred books, articles, chapters, and papers. His most recent books are Administrators Solving the Problems of Practice, (Allyn & Bacon, 1995) with C. J. Tarter; The Road to Open and Healthy Schools (Corwin, 1997) with C. J. Tarter; Quality Middle Schools (Corwin, 1998) with Dennis Sabo.

Since October 1988, Cecil G. Miskel has been dean of and a professor in the School of Education at the University of Michigan. He served the University of Utah as a professor and chairperson of the Department of Educational Administration from 1982 to 1983 and dean of the Graduate School of Education from 1983 to 1988. He holds a doctor of education degree from Oklahoma State University. In addition, to being a co-author of the five editions of Education Administration, he has published widely in a variety of scholarly journals.

Excellent Theory...Especially For Early Childhood Professionals

Even though it falls a bit short in a lot of practical application, Hoy & Miskel do a superb job in outlining just about every possible ed admin theory that is relevant in educationa entities today.

The top sections of this book that are DEFINITELY worth reading are Chapter 10's discussion on shared decision-making, Chapter 12's discussion on leadership, Chapter 4's discussion on what motivates individuals, and Chapter 5's section on climate & culture.

I recommend this book and along with Caruso & Fawcett's SUPERVISION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION: A DEVELOPMENTAL PERSPECTIVE.

If you are interested in learning how to be a good leader or administrator, this is your book. I am currently using it as a textbook for doctoral studies.
Excellent content as well as an relatively easy read.

Had to buy it for a class

The price on Amazon can't be beat. Pair it with Amazon Prime and it's a winner. The content is another story. It is dry, dry, dry reading. I am supposed to be reading it now, and I am doing everything but reading. I get that it's not the most exciting topic, but the author doesn't do much to make it any more "readable." It's so dry and so data heavy, and really, it you are going to be a Principal and don't know half the stuff in here by nature, then you probably should pick another profession! But, the content is good. Just wish it had a bit more personality!
