Good Reference Work--Core Collection Item

I'm amazed that no one has reviewed this yet. This reissue was published about ten years ago. I hunted down the old kicking mule copies via interlibrary loan years ago, and though the tab used on those original imprints was a bit odd, it was still readable. It's such a relief to see these arrangements in normal tab finally!

The book comes with a CD of the first Kicking Mule album, and that's almost worth the price of admission right there. I love those recordings--even if Art takes things a bit fast at times, he mixes up solos with a good choice of songs you're not liable to find anywhere else("Tennessee Line Hard Times", a variant of "Old Reuben"). One gripe is that they may as well have just added his second album as well for good measure.

I especially appreciate the mix of transcriptions of clawhammer with other picking styles. As much as we associate clawhammer with traditional banjo picking, there were other picking styles that pre-dated Scruggs. Art Rosenbaum seems to be the only one who gives these styles any air time. For example, I love Doc Boggs, and I learned a great deal about Boggs' style working out Art's transcription of "Country Blues"

If you're just a straight clawhammer player, I still think it's worth getting for those arrangments. The rest makes for a nice encyclopedia of oddball picking styles. So, I'll lead off with five stars.

Great overview of traditional banjo styles

I second the review above -- this a great collection of tunes and arrangements that also provides an excellent introduction to many of the lesser-known pre-bluegrass mountain styles of banjo playing. It is worth noting that the clawhammer tab, which takes up about 3/4 of the book, is definitely more sophisticated than the average beginner's guide to frailing. This is probably not the best book for the absolute beginner, although for musicians picking up the banjo for the first time it would most likely work. I would strongly recommend it to those looking to expand their old-time banjo repertoire beyond the basics.

Rich and varied in styles, tasty "settings" (arrangments)

It took me a while to hear the pun in the title, but this book is also very engagingly written--Art Rosenbaum's quite a skilled writer, in addition to his other talents. The tabs are deceptive in print--there are so many that you may think they're but perfunctory generic versions of each tune. Try a few, though, and you won't think that any more! Each one opens up that song for you on the banjo. If you want to add some variety to your playing of an old standby, for example, see the potpourri of versions of "Old Joe Clark" offered here (including Art's take on Wade Ward's version).

The cd is a treat too, although, like another reviewer, I'd have preferred a slightly slower pace on a couple of the songs. Some are just not as pretty as they are when played a little more slowly.

That looks like a Wildwood banjo on the cover, which is most apt. The mountains, I suppose, are to remind us that the music has long since spread beyond the Appalachians ...

A very intimate look at this amazing artist. And to think that I thought he only did chairs! This book lets you look inside the man, who was very spiritual and humble and wise. If you want to understand what made him tick and what his philosophy was, this is a great book. The history of the furniture designs is also fascinating, with personal details that bring it all to life. Plus the timeline and list of public sculptures is really helpful. For anyone who is a fan of Bertoia's, this is the book to get.

Stephen Anderson is a Professor in the Department of Human Development & Family Studies at the University of Connecticut.� He is Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program and the Center for Applied Research in Human Development.� He received his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Kansas State University. His research interests include - Youth Development, Assessment of Family Functioning, Couple and Family Violence, Family Therapy Supervision and Training, and Program Evaluation.

Ronald Sabatelli is Professor & Department Head�of the Department of Human Development & Family Studies at the University of Connecticut.�He received his Ph.D. in Family Studies from the University of Connecticut.� His research interests include�how family of origin experiences influence the structure and experience of parenthood and romantic relationships; youth development, and the assessment of relationship and family functioning. He is currently the editor of Family Relations, an interdisciplinary journal of applied family studies, published on behalf of the National Council on Family Relations.

Superb for those interested in family systems and theapy!

I first knew of Anderson and Sabatelli's works through the professional journals in family studies and family therapy. I used the instrument "Differentiation in the Family Systems Scale (DIFS)" developed by them in my master's thesis research. Their approach is mostly influenced by Murray Bowen's family system theory. In this text, they again use the Bowenian theory as a grounding framework, combined with structural family theories (i.e. Salvador Minuchin, David Olson's circumplex model..etc.). The authors did an excellent job of integrating existing family science literature. For example, in chapter II--family strategies, they propose six universal strategies families employ to meet developmental tasks during the family life cycle: developing identity, regulating boundary, maintaining resources, managing emotions, and coping with stress. Then, these strategies were used to illustrate family interaction patterns in different family developmental stages throughout the chapters in Part III. The last part disscusses four alternative family developmental pathways. I find the chapter on death, loss, and bereavement is especially insightful. Unfortunately, gay and lesbian relationships were not included here (nor in the "family diversity" chapter). That makes the book somewhat incomplete. However, I find the text is very suitable for introductory family courses, especially for those who prefer psychological approach rather than traditional sociological approach. This book is also recommended for family therapy students as the foundamental knowledge base. Though I left the graduate school few years ago and am a counselor now, I still find some concepts in the book very refreshing and useful for clinical conceptualization. I give this book a very high praise!

I can highly recommend this book to lovers of African Rift Lakes Cichlids.

It presents an extremely comprehensive range of pictures of all known Lake Malawi Cichlid Species and outlines the habitat, behaviour and diet of most of the cichlid populations in Lake Malawi.

Malawi Cichlids - In Their Natural Habitat is written from a evolutionary biological perspective and presents some interesting theories on the evolution of the Malawi Cichlids and can be heavy reading at times.

This book is for the serious enthusiast.

This text is a definite great read for anyone who loves Lake Malawi Cichlids, and who is interested in a comprehensive description of all the Species from that lake. The photos are gorgeous and of high quality, and I have used them to help identify species or confirm them. Lacking are photos of BOTH sexes, and the juveniles ("juvies"). However, this is indeed an excellent reference book, by the most famous author of African Cichlid books and articles. This book in combination with one of his others, Back to Nature: Malawi Cichlids (Revised & Expanded Edition)make a wonderful "combo" and probably should be sold together as in many ways they compliment each other. I have both and absolutely love them. I have many books on Malawi Cichlids, but these are my most used. A definite *****. Happy reading, and enjoy those fantastic fish, who bring their world into our aquaria, if we give them the right media and size aquaria. I hope Dr Konings will, in future writings, include some information re compatible Malawi Cichlids (in terms of color and temperament) and also other fish which may also be good co-habitants, e.g. synodontis catfish.

Diane also has training and experience in Healing, Inner Healing, and Deliverance Ministry. She has done Pastoral Counseling and Prayer Counseling Ministry. Revenge is hot!

I don't usually go for shorts like this, but now that the secret is officially out, I can tell you why I read Tantalus -- how could I possibly resist the grittier side of K.C. Wells. Don't expect contract negotiations between caring Doms and eager subs here! This is two horny men getting their kink on.

Damon may have been in charge in Summer Heat (Damon & Pete: Playing with Fire Book 1) but Pete is ready to pay him back now. I don't think Damon ever saw what Pete has in mind coming! Enjoy the dirty sex and the play for what it is and if you haven't read the first book, know that the seemingly non-con/dub-con situation Damon finds himself in here is all part of the game.

Revenge is sweet, and hot and dirty, and comes with a remote control. Pete knows what he's doing, knows what he wants and knows what Damon will have in store for him and I think that's exactly what Pete is counting on.

Hotter than Hot

After is at least as hot and tantalising as its prequel, Summer Heat is. In the first book Pete was in for a few exciting surprises. This time it is Damon who finds himself in a position he never expected to end up in and having a hard time getting his head around events and his reactions to them.

For Damon payback comes when he least expects it and, as the blurb says, he discovers it’s a bitch. I’ve got a feeling it will be a different story for Pete when his turn comes around again. For me that moment can’t come soon enough.

There’s not a lot more I can say about the story. I want to say you need to read it, but while that is true, it wouldn’t be quite right. Let’s leave it at this being a story you need to experience. This series is unapologetically hot and sexy. This is eroticism at its best; well-written, no holds barred kinky times for those who enjoy such a thing.

So Pete's a little bit of a sadist too, but not in the painful way. He turned Damon into a switch. The next book will probably be payback.....

Modern design of berm breakwaters began about thirty years ago. However, to date, there has been a lack of a well-established, formal design methodology on berm breakwaters. About the Author
Dr Jentsje van der Meer is a well-known expert in appraisal, design, and testing of breakwaters and coastal structures; including levees, dikes, embankments, seawalls, breakwaters, groynes, revetments, shingle beaches and river dikes. His work on rubble mound structures has been included in all manuals all over the world. He has worked at Delft Hydraulics, now Deltares, a well-known institute on specialised consulting and research of water related issues, for 16 years. For ten years he had a position at Infram International, a private consultant for infrastructure appraisal and management, where he exploited his experience in specialized consultancy and research. In 2007 he started his own company, Van der Meer Consulting BV, on Coastal Engineering Consultancy & Research. In 2014, he became a part time professor of Coastal Structures and Ports at UNESCO-IHE, Delft, The Netherlands, with also a 0-fte position at Delft University of Technology.

Sigurdur Sigurdarson has over 30 years of experience as a coastal and harbour engineer, both in Iceland, as well as internationally, working on breakwater projects in four continents. His main emphasis has been on coastal structures, including breakwaters, revetments and groynes. He has been involved in all aspects from planning of structures, establishment of environmental load and design criteria, design, model testing and armourstone quarry evaluation, through to tendering, construction management, supervision of construction and quarrying, as well as performance monitoring. Through a number of breakwater projects, he has developed and introduced the Icelandic-type berm breakwater. Sigurdarson established the IceBreak Consulting Engineers, which specialises in breakwaters and armourstone quarrying, in 2010.
