This is a really good study book, it flows really well, it's easy to learn; I'm a grown adult and I have really liked how simple this books allows you to learn. I really helps you with writing in Spanish and with practice it gives you a lot of phrases to begin speaking the language.

Good workbook to start with.

I am 36 years old and decided to teach myself Spanish. I got this book so I could start at the beginning and I am glad I did. Yes it is an elementary level workbook but that is where I needed to start. I did get several different workbooks like this and it did got a little boring going over the same things but it was also really good review and I am glad that I got these.

As former residents of Jerusalem and now well-acclaimed London restaurateurs, they have compiled a luscious, photographic collection of 120 recipes with origins encompassing various religions, countries, and, occasionally, continents. The history of the city and of foods found there are sprinkled throughout the text, as are visuals not only of recipes but also of the people who inhabit Jerusalem and beyond. Expect discourses on the humble aubergine (eggplant); za’atar, a native herb; hummus wars; and even Georgian cuisine. The book’s leisurely pace picks up with the introduction of dishes, some familiar but many not, that include fattoush, latkes, mejadra, clear chicken soup with knaidlach, pan-fried mackerel with golden beetroot and orange salsa, and helbeh (fenugreek cake). Measurements are computed in grams, and, unfortunately, the more exotic ingredients, such as arak and zhoug, might prove elusive to all but the most avid chefs. Amazing. Doable. So good.

This cookbook is approachable and the recipes are actually something you will make...and then make again. If you love Middle Eastern cuisine, buy this. I have made the basic Hummus...it takes some time, so be aware that you need 24 hours. It was so good. I agree with the authors that if anything is going to bring the middle east to peace..it's gotta be the hummus. The other thing I made was the Couscous with tomato and onion. Love the flavors, I will make both of these again. The great thing about the recipes are, they aren't so wild that you can't imagine making them. The ingredients are, for the most part, easy to find. The techniques are simple enough for the home cook. Falafel is next on the list.

****Edit****I would just like to say, that one of the reasons, I think, that this is so doable for a Middle Eastern cookbook, is these are the recipes that regular people make. This is what the moms and grandmas make. That's the kind of food I want to make as well, good home cooking.

Top 10 cookbook

I almost never post reviews, but this books is so wonderful, I felt compelled to add to the accolades it's receiving. I am a professional cook, so I buy and cook from a TON of cookbooks. Many I use mainly for inspiration in terms of flavor combinations because the recipes don't actually work so well. Some I use to explore new techniques. This cookbook offers both; the recipes work (I should note I have the UK edition without US conversions)--many of the techniques are new to me and they work well--and the flavors are amazing. And it's a gorgeous cookbook as well.

The first recipes I made from this book were the roasted cauliflower salad with celery, hazelnuts and pomegranate and the sofrito chicken. I figured there was no way the cauliflower salad could be anything but delicious, and it was. But I had my doubts about the chicken--the recipe involved several steps (browning the chicken, seasoning the chicken, steam-roasting the chicken, frying potatoes and garlic and then adding them to the chicken and its juices). I didn't think it would be any better than a simple roast chicken and vegetables (which is hard to improve on when done well). But it was unbelievably delicious! And had a texture and subtlety of flavor I had never tasted before.

It's true that some of these dishes are not week-night fare--as one reviewer mentioned, you can't throw them all on the table in under an hour. But many of them are. A quick read-through of the recipe should let you know which are quicker and which take an hour or more of prep and cooking.

I am adding this cookbook to my top 10 list because a) it's a beautiful, well-written book, b) the recipes work very well when followed to the letter, but there's lots of room for improvisation, c) the flavor and texture combinations are complex, subtle and well-balanced, and d) the dishes are delicious.

Amazing book! Absolutely delicious! Healthy! Flavorful! Aesthetically pleasing! Fantastic! The man's absolutely the king of produce.

I love this book. This book is not vegetarian, but very produce heavy. His book, Plenty, is vegetarian, and also a fantastic book.

Pictured below:
1) My youngest hates artichokes and beets and happily devoured her Stuffed Artichokes with Peas and Dill and Pur�ed Beets with Yogurt and Za'atar. Fantastic!
2-3) Maqluba (Ma'aluba). It's a layered dinner of tomatoes, fried eggplant, fried cauliflower, chicken thighs, rice flavored with spices and the chicken broth made by cooking the chicken, and garlic. It's inverted on the plate and sprinkled with pine nuts cooked in butter. A cucumber yogurt accompaniment goes with it. It's similar to tsatziki, but flavored with both dried and fresh mint. My family loved this dinner.
4) Pistachio Soup - p138. Amazingly decadent, delicious, and fragrant.
5) Roasted Butternut Squash with Tahini and Za'atar - p36. Wonderful. Penzey's carries za'atar if your grocer doesn't.

I can't wait to try the rest of this book! Absolutely recommend!

Excellent book on HIV in Africa

Really a must read for anyone working in HIV in sub-Saharan Africa or just seeking to understand the history of the epidemic in SSA or anywhere. Very accessible while being filled with information. It does not require a particularly sophisticate amount of knowledge about HIV or SSA, though some basic knowledge would help. It will be required reading in any course I teach on HIV.

Great Spanish 1 Book

The story began in Paris, France during the Spanish Civil War. A place you wouldn't expect to be seen in a spanish novel. The plot of the book is pretty straight forward, Get the spear of destiny. The spear of destiny is a special spear that everyone is trying to get. Everyone being Paula, Luis, Mario and Javier. Mario and Javier are spies for General Francisco Franco. Mario and Paula have a crush on each other and the romance continues throughout the book. I thought the book was quite good for what it was. I thought it was a bit dry but was still surprised. I thought it was just going to be god awful. I definitely recommend this book for early spanish learners.

I loved the settings

I am a Spanish major and have been to the Prado to see Picasso's Guernica but I still learned a few interesting facts. It is written on a very low level of Spanish. This is not a book written for children but those learning Spanish. There is a big difference and publishers are only now realizing this. The font is large and double spaced and there are lots of historical photographs. I found the chase scenes a little silly and the timing seemed off. The ending was also a bit abrupt. Overall, it was very enjoyable reading with interesting settings.

A Must Have For Serious ASL Students!

I'll admit that when I purchased this book, I was doing it more for an addition to my library than for actual use. Being a Deaf American Sign Language teacher, I'd often used several other basic ASL books and thought them sufficient, to a point. However, when I got my hands on this book, I was thrilled with the extra mile the writers and illustrators went when producing it.
This book is similar to "A Basic Course in ASL," and some may find it hard to dicern between the two. However, this book has many more practice sentences and conversation. Many more opportunities to use your new-found skills. Many more illustrations. There is use of slang and idiomatic language that isn't found often in other resources.
You can purchase a videotape to accompany this book. If you are learning on your own, that really is a must-have. Otherwise, this book offers a full course in beginning your trip to understanding true American Sign Language (versus Signed English or Contact Sign). Highly recommended by this deafie! :v)

Pros and Cons

I used this text for my ASL 1 and ASL 2 courses in college, and I think this text was better organized compared to some other texts for learning sign. However, some of the pictures are a bit difficult to decifer and some of the signs are repeated throughout the text. I would like to see the video and the text as a package deal for fifty one dollars, perhaps that would be more worth one's money.

Lots of Vocab...too bad most of it is localized

This was a text I used in Beginning ASL II. There is a supplemental video that goes along with the book as well.
While there is tons of vocabulary used in this text, most of it is used the the Pacific Northwest area. This is not a great book if you're taking classes in the midwest or even the south. I was really glad that I had a professor that could show me local signs in my State/City/neighborhood.
There is some examples of ASL grammar included, but nothing hard and fast. As I've learned, the grammar has been easier to pick up.
The video I mentioned is very helpful since most of the exercises revolve around certain scenes that are acted out. There are some werid camera angles during a few black and white "intermissions".

A solid guide to theological writing for some theological contexts

The book consists of four parts. Yaghjian begins by discussing theological rhetoric. This includes considering the context of the writing, focusing on inquiry, reflection, and persuasion, and using tools of identification, correlation, suspicion and construction. Part Two deals with the task of research, documenting that research well, and some chapters on exegesis and hermeneutics. The third part emphasizes writing style, with a focus on discovering one’s voice and the use of analogy, metaphor, etc. This section also deals with some basics of sentence and paragraph construction and delves into the vital art of revision. The fourth section focuses on writing in “new contexts,” which goes from the writing of international students, to various forms of online writing.

Writing Theology Well is a volume that contains many of the basic elements of a writing guide. There are helpful guidelines and checklists for the revision process, some ideas about structuring arguments, and a healthy emphasis on writing techniques that aid clear communication. As a guide to writing, this volume has the necessary framework to be helpful.

The promise in a book like this is that it tailored specifically for a particular type of writing, namely, theological writing. As I transitioned from my undergrad in English to writing for a technical audience in nuclear power to taking seminary courses, there were often points of frustration where a tool that I had used in a previous life was no longer acceptable. For this reason Writing Theology Well held out the promise of a helpful tool that I could benefit from and that I’d recommend to others.

In the end, this is probably a very fine book for a particular context. Yaghjian puts the fundamentals of writing on display in a way that is consistent with the best “how-to” manuals. Her emphasis on planning, revising, and structure are right on the mark. This is a volume that many will probably find helpful for writing, but most likely not in more conservative contexts.
