Quicksand: America's Pursuit of Power in the Middle East, by Geoffrey Wawro

An unprecedented history of American involvement in the Middle East.

In this definitive and revelatory work, noted historian Geoffrey Wawro approaches America's role in the Middle East in a fundamentally new way-by encompassing the last century of the entire region rather than focusing narrowly on a particular country or era. With verve and authority, he offers piercing analysis of the region's iconic events over the past one hundred years-from the birth of Israel to the rise of Al Qaeda. Throughout, he draws telling parallels between America's past mistakes and its current dilemmas, proving that we're in today's muddle not just because of our old errors but because we keep repeating those errors.

From Booklist
Wawro is a historian whose previous works have focused upon warfare in nineteenth-century Europe; viewers of the History Channel may also recognize him as the telegenic host of Hardcover History and other programs. In this book, Wawro tackles the formidable challenge of writing a comprehensive history of American involvement in the Middle East. In many ways an attempt to explain the historical genesis of the bind in which the U.S. currently finds itself, the author’s main narrative threads are the U.S.’ complicated and often conflicting relationships with Israel and Saudi Arabia. All else, he suggests, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and perennial tensions with Iran, is to some extent a collateral consequence of these Israeli and Saudi allegiances. Noting many parallels between past mistakes and present challenges, this selection culminates in an earnest argument for a more coherent and historically honest foreign policy going forward. It’s an ambitious project, but Wawro’s considerable talent for seamlessly blending military, social, and political history (as well as his extensive archival elbow grease) makes it a success. --Brendan Driscoll

Review
"A keen-eyed, sweeping survey of . . . U.S. policy in the Middle East since the Balfour Declaration in 1917. . . . An excellent argument for the necessity of careful sifting of historical precedent and error."
-Kirkus Reviews

"A coherent and highly readable analysis of America's involvement in the Middle East... Whereas many books have been written about one Middle East nation or one aspect of this topic, Wawro successfully provides the big picture."
-Library Journal

"An ambitious project, but Wawro's considerable talent for seamlessly blending military, social, and political history (as well as his extensive archival elbow grease) makes it a success."
-Booklist

"A bold and comprehensive account of America's involvement in the Middle East. Quicksand cannot answer the haunting question posed by General David Petraeus during the 2003 invasion of Iraq-'Tell me how this ends?'-but Geoffrey Wawro's history does reveal how an extraordinary tale of idealism, politics, force, and miscalculation began and unfolded over the past century."
-Rick Atkinson, author of An Army at Dawn

"Wawro does a terrific job of explaining why America's Middle East policy has been so wrongheaded for so long, and how it has gotten the United States into so much trouble in recent years. Quicksand should be required reading for everyone in Washington whohas a hand in formulating policy toward the Arab and Islamic world."
-John J. Mearsheimer, R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago

"Foreign policy is a chief responsibility of any American president, yet readers of Geoff Wawro's Quicksand will be shocked by the history he describes- presidents, members of Congress, and lobbyists who consistently sacrificed statesmanship to expediency, leaving the U.S. stuck in the Middle Eastern quicksand Wawro so richly describes."
-Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

Unholy Alliance: Politics and Oil
By Paul Hosse
Few topics grab my attention more than the Middle East. Civilization began there, along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates, and some claim it may end there. The world's economy is fueled by the oil produced by just a handful of countries, and yet, rather than being a stable region because of global dependence on oil, it is the world's most volatile. The Middle East, the vortex of civilization, has in many ways become a black hole; dragging the nations ever closer to its center, and like a black hole, threatening to rip the world apart. Few nations have been able to long escape its grasp. So, how did America, and indeed, the rest of world's industrial nations, become ensnared the shifting sands of the Middle Eastern politics?

Few books have so expertly been able to answer that question better than Geoffrey Wawro's "Quicksand: America's Pursuit of Power in the Middle East". Mr. Wawro, who is a Professor of Military History at the University of North Texas, as well as director the Military History Center at UNT, has been able to unravel the Byzantine world of Middle Eastern politics, woven into the cultures and religion of the people for generations, and give the reader a clear and comprehensive history.

For example, Dr. Wawo describes the blunders of the British Empire in closing years of World War I resulting from the vacuum of the collapsing Ottoman Empire and imperialist myopia which left Britain in control of areas such as the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt and Palestine, while the French, seeking to maintain its shrinking empire, gained control of Syria. As a result, Arab nationalist aligned themselves with Nazi Germany (and Nazi Germany's policy of anti-Semitism didn't hurt either). The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem was often a guest in Berlin, and Arabs were invited to join in a SS division comprised solely of Moslem Arabs (that veneration of all things Nazi, not unexpectedly, still continues in some Arab nations to this day).

Dr. Wawo goes on to explain how the increasing Jewish presence in the region, especially in Palestine, thanks in large part to the backroom dealings of President Truman, as well as British and French incompetence, as well as a growing powerful Jewish lobby lead to the establishment of Israel, against a backdrop of the Cold War, religious hatred, and economics. Many a Prime Minister and President has sought to get a grip on the Middle East, only to find events as fluid as the shifting sands.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. Anyone who wants to understand how and why were engaged in two wars in the region; why we're drilling oil wells offshore; why we're investing billions in alternative energy sources; why we're under threat from terrorists; or why we're paying nearly $3.00 for a gallon of gas needs to read this book. The threat is not just to America, but the world is real. If knowledge is power, then Geoffrey Wawro's 551 page "Quicksand: America's Pursuit of Power in the Middle East" is an excellent tool to have one's arsenal.

Fluent, masterful, gripping history of US in the Middle East!
By Birch West
Every policymaker in Washington should be reading this book, which avoids the usual focus on crisis du jour and instead charts the spread of US power and influence in the region, from the days of Woodrow Wilson down to Barack Obama, from the Balfour Declaration to the Bush Doctrine. It's all here: Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, the Cold War and terrorism. What I like most about the book is the way it presents each presidential administration as having had CHOICES to make -- some quite pivotal -- and most chose not to make them because they wanted to avoid roiling the Israel or Saudi lobbies. AIPAC types will NOT like this book, for its clear and strategic presentation of the facts, but they should read it anyway. The book is extremely readable, and presents quite an education in a single volume.

Great stimulating book, Five Stars!
By Ramming
I loved this book. It is deep and educational, but it is never dull. Wawro blends biography, anecdote and truly startling analysis to shed light on America's checkered progress in the Middle East. The portraits of people like Nasser, Anthony Eden, Ike, Nixon, Bush 41 and 43, LBJ, Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir, and the Shah are memorable and entertaining. Wawro's analysis of the wars of the region contains some pretty shocking revelations. Read this book!

Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible: The Surreal Heart of the New Russia, by Peter Pomerantsev

In the new Russia, even dictatorship is a reality show.

Professional killers with the souls of artists, would-be theater directors turned Kremlin puppet-masters, suicidal supermodels, Hell's Angels who hallucinate themselves as holy warriors, and oligarch revolutionaries: welcome to the glittering, surreal heart of twenty-first-century Russia. It is a world erupting with new money and new power, changing so fast it breaks all sense of reality, home to a form of dictatorship—far subtler than twentieth-century strains—that is rapidly rising to challenge the West.

When British producer Peter Pomerantsev plunges into the booming Russian TV industry, he gains access to every nook and corrupt cranny of the country. He is brought to smoky rooms for meetings with propaganda gurus running the nerve-center of the Russian media machine, and visits Siberian mafia-towns and the salons of the international super-rich in London and the US. As the Putin regime becomes more aggressive, Pomerantsev finds himself drawn further into the system.

Dazzling yet piercingly insightful, Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible is an unforgettable voyage into a country spinning from decadence into madness.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, November 2014: When the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 90s, the West rejoiced with the relief that came with the end of the Cold War and the possibility of an era of peace and cooperation. At the same time, its corporations and conglomerates trained a beady eye toward its newly opened markets, and a seemingly virgin economic landscape soon became home to icons such as Coke and McDonalds and Levi’s. But the door was open wide, and tagging along with big business were some seedier characters: organized crime, a youth-and-glamour-obsessed oligarchy, and an entertainment complex hungry for the new concepts of its Western counterparts. That’s where Peter Pomerantsev comes in. Born in Kiev but raised in Great Britain, Pomerantsev returned to Russia as a consultant to its burgeoning film and television—especially “reality” television—industries. What he found was a capitalist’s wet dream: an unfettered cash and service economy with no apparent limits on cash or available services--one where everything is possible, if you can pay for it. At the top of it all sits Vlad Putin, infusing the old TASS tactics with Hollywood flair to create a vision of a bare-chested (bear-chested?) virility and power, of both self and state. Pomerantsev finds himself gazing deeper into this looking-glass world—willingly and otherwise—and he finds it impossible to look away, as will his readers. This is not your father’s Russia, and yet it kind of is.--Jon Foro

Review
“A scintillating take on a twisted reality.”—Prospect Magazine

"Sometimes horrifying but always compelling, this book exposes the bizarre reality hiding beneath the facade of a ‘youthful, bouncy, glossy country.'"—Publishers Weekly

“It is hard to think of another work that better describes today's Russia; Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible may very well be the defining book about the Putin era. This might seem like excessive praise for a relatively short, non-academic memoir by a reality-TV producer now living in London, but it is justified by the author's gimlet eye and reportorial skill."—Commentary Magazine

“A brilliant, entertaining, and ultimately tragic book about not only Russia, but the West.”—Tablet Magazine,

“[A] riveting, urgent book ... Pomerantsev is one of the most perceptive, imaginative and entertaining commentators writing on Russia today and, much like the country itself, his first book is seductive and terrifying in equal measure.” —The Times (UK)

“This is the strangest book of note I have ever read… a dark and grotesque comedy of manners… His reporter's straightforward and unlimited curiosity, his willingness to plow and harrow the widest fields for facts, and his exacting descriptive details give him credibility. Very Entertaining
By Thomas Reiter
As noted by other reviewers, the author is a very good story-teller and has included many entertaining and--to some extent--informative vignettes in this book.

I have lived in Moscow for many years and have been to many of the places mentioned in the book--unlike some other works I've read about Moscow, this author's descriptions and insights about places and events generally ring true. Moreover, he describes many interesting incidents/personalities that I was not previously aware of, so reading this book was certainly worthwhile for me. As a journalist, the author seems to have had a very good perch from which to observe a rapidly and constantly evolving Moscow.

Some other reviewers have criticized the book for not enabling them to "understand" Russia any better. Don't expect to read this--or any other--book and come away with an "understanding" of Russia, but at least it might help readers appreciate why Russia is such a difficult place to understand.

I enjoyed the book, so why not five stars? I had three basic concerns about the book:

1) Russia, and Moscow in particular, evolves rapidly and is changing constantly. Therefore, many of the author's observations seem a bit dated at this point. The author generally doesn't provide much of a timeline in the book, so it is often hard to determine whether he is writing about 2002 or 2012. Moscow in 2014 is a very different place from Moscow 2002 or Moscow 2012;

2) While many of the author's stories are very entertaining, the result is sort of a grotesque caricature of Moscow, which in fact is a huge and heterogeneous city, with millions of absolutely ordinary people very different from those described in this book. The author provides a good description of an interesting but freakish "froth" of people that provide good copy, but creates an impression that they, rather than ordinary citizens, define the city (which, admittedly, they do to some extent...). Therefore, as you read this book, bear in mind that millions of people are taking the subway/bus to work every day as book keepers, lawyers, account managers, etc., pretty much like everywhere else in the world...

3) In a few instances, the author seems to overdramatize things a bit. For example, he goes on and on about the constant fear of having your "documents checked", etc. In fact, I don't think I've had my "documents checked" even once in the last several years, and it is certainly not something I'm worried about (this kind of thing was indeed more common several years ago, hence my comment about some observations being somewhat dated...).

Please Read This Book If You Want An Entertaining Primer On Modern Russia
By Philip L. Tudor
I hope this book has a lot of sales, not only to reward the author for a first class job, but also to give the reader an inside, and immensely entertaining, look at the cogs that make the Russia machine work.

Peter Pomerantsev was a producer for a Russian television station which gave him an inside pass to virtually anyplace he wanted to go in Russian culture, with the exception possibly of Putin's office (but Pomerantsev gets pretty close to there also). For those who have never seen Moscow, the author has the ability to make you feel you are in all parts of Moscow, usually its most expensive highrise center closest to the Kremlin, then past the endless concentric circular freeways around the center but further and further away from it, where you at last end up way out in the suburds in the muddy polluted yard of a complex of iconic Soviet block slum apartments and charmless cheaply made office buildings.

But the essence of the book is not the author's expert setting of the scene, its the inside look at how the society functions: the opposition political parties paid for and directed by the Kremlin; the male dominated world of the oligarchs living grandly off the graft, corruption and theft of the national assets, with how much any particular oligarch gets determined by how close he or she is to the Kremlin. Then, right when you believe you know how it all works, you meet a millionaire who earned his money honestly in the confusion of the conversion to "capitalism" (in quotes because Russia really only barely looks now like a capitalist state on the surface), who became legitimately terrified of being killed by customers on his accounts revievable list.

Then there are the women. The wives of the oligarchs seldom spend time in Moscow. They are living an exquisite jet set existence with a primary base in London, while the husbands toil away stealing in Moscow living in penthouses of new luxury highrises with littered halls. The wealthy wives have reason to worry about what their husbands are doing alone in Moscow, as the husbands are not alone. There is a whole cottage industry of mistresses who trot from oligarch to oligarch as their sugar daddies tire of them, and learn their skills at places such as "Golddiggers' Academy." One step down from the mistresses are the bar prostitutes who do the best when they don't look like prostitutes.

Pomerantsev shows us the active self help industry such as the US had in the late Seventies and Eighties (remember "EST"?), and how it caused the death of two supermodels. He also surprisingly shows Russia's domination of the international modeling industry.

What is certainly a wake up call is Pomerantsev's descrption of traditional "Russian values" in a very new state. He explains first off, that Russia has no positive role models to use as national historic heroes. After all, even Peter the Great was a tyrant who killed thousands building St. Petersburg. Now, the Putin supported values are racism directed towards anyone not pure Slav white, dangerous homophobia accompanied by torture, and supposedly Russian Orthodoxy though hardly anyone goes to church (with the exception of the biker gang Putin belongs to - the "Night Wolves."

The author also describes the latest hassle for the wealthy. When you are an oligarch in Russia, you really never own anything inside Russia, because the prevailing winds of favoritism in the government change constantly. Also, Russian oligarchs have learned their lesson from the aristocrats who brought back all their foreign invested money to Russian before WWI and the Revolution, and ended up penniless. Thus, there is a mad rush by oligarchs to invest as absolutely much as possible out of the country. Now, however, with the economy spinning out of control and sanctions with asset freezes, Putin has made it illegal to transfer any money out of Russia. Not only was a similar strategy used on a volunteer basis right before WWI, but this was also the rule of law in apartheid South Africa, and was a huge disinventive for whites to emigrate.

Pomerantsev is scared that Russia is a vision of the future and appears to see it growing in power. I disagree. The impression I got of the Russia Pomerantsev shows was of a skyscraper standing on an extremely shaky foundation.

A (highly readable, personalized) lesson in an multidirectional mass political subversion and social engineering through media and systematized corruption that you hope can't possibly be as intentional and capable as it seems to be - and the whole time you sense that you are peeking behind the curtain of your own existence; just a glimpse.

Review
"This book is an education in all things Kentucky barbecue―smoke, time, pork, burgoo, and the ever-whangy, sometimes misunderstood mutton. With Wes Berry's Kentucky Barbecue Book in hand, readers are sure to embark on a lip-smacking trip through the best BBQ in the Bluegrass State."―Maggie Green, author of The Kentucky Fresh Cookbook

"This is a love letter to the old Kentucky. It's written from the heart, and Berry used his barbecue quest as an excuse to get off the interstates and savor the landscapes and people found along the blue highways and country roads of your state. Next time I come to Kentucky, I hope to have a copy in my glove compartment."―John Shelton Reed, coauthor of Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue

"Berry has given us a first-person tour through a state he loves, through foods prepared with care, humor, and devotion. He and the people he meets can turn a phrase, sniff out a story, and dig into history on the plate. The Kentucky Barbecue Book is the cure for all your Upper South barbecue blues."―Elizabeth Engelhardt, author of Republic of Barbecue: Stories beyond the Brisket

"Read Wes Berry's book and you'll recognize: 1) He's a cantankerous thinker, with a pleasantly skewed sense of humor. 2) He's an able observer and compiler of culinary culture, whose time in Kentucky barbecue pits is unmatched."―John T. Edge, author of Southern Belly: The Ultimate Food Lover's Companion to the South

"In The Kentucky Barbecue Book, Wes Berry does all the hard work for you. He's been to the places, good and bad, so you can stop only at the best ones. He's dug up the ancient history of the state's smoked art, so you don't have to get sauce prints on the library's rare volumes. He's traveled to other states and sampled their smoked meat so you can understand Kentucky barbecue in context. If your curiosity extends beyond the plate, give Wes Berry and his book your attention. He will tell you more about Kentucky barbecue than any one else has ever committed to print."―Lolis Eric Elie, author of Smokestack Lightning: Adventures in the Heart of Barbecue Country

"Forget about Texas, Tennessee, Kansas, and the Carolinas. Kentucky has some of the best American barbecue you've never heard of. Wes Berry may suffer from HEBD (Hyper Enthusiastic Barbecue Disorder), but he's determined get the word out about the wood-burning pits, lip-stinging sauces, and belt-loosening barbecue pork, beef, turkey, and yes, mutton of his beloved Kentucky. In this lively, authoritative, irreverent, and meticulously researched book, you'll experience everything from Monroe Country dip (made with vinegar and lard) to Owensboro-style barbecued mutton, from burgoo (Kentucky's iconic stew) to banana pudding."―Steven Raichlen, author of The Barbecue! Bible

"Beginning in western Kentucky and moving eastward, Berry takes readers on a barbecue pilgrimage, profiling each stop with care, humor, and devotion. . . . This book is a love letter to the landscapes, people, and rich barbecue traditions of the Commonwealth. Honoring the wood-burning pits, lip-stinging sauces, and belt-loosening barbecue pork, beef, turkey, and mutton of his beloved home state, Berry asserts that Kentucky's barbecue is worthy of recognition and exploration."―Cookbook Digest

"[A] lively, often humorous, always hunger-inducing 356-page love song to Kentucky barbecue. . . . [The Kentucky Barbecue Book] strikes the perfect tone between worshipfulness and irreverence. A must-read for any serious student of American barbecue."―Steven Raichlen's Barbecue! Bible

"Berry's guide not only puts Kentucky barbecue on the map for foodies, but it also recognizes and describes a folk culture unique to the state's borders."―Farmer's Market Online

"Don't miss this passionate exploration of the recipes, traditions, and people who have helped shaped Kentucky's uniquely regional slow-food dish."―Taste of the South

well-written guide to barbeque in the Bluegrass State
By R. Shelby
Wes Berry could be my next hero. He traveled the Commonwealth of Kentucky sampling the fare at barbeque joints -- a job I would dearly love. His initial goal was to write a travelogue as he visited every barbeque eatery in the state. Along the way, personalities, history, trivia and traditions got mixed into the travelogue. The result is a book with personality -- not purely travelogue or restaurant reviews or history but a blend of these. Mr. Berry lists barbeque restaurants in the state region by region. He tells us what he liked and didn't much care for at each place. But he also writes of people he met, cooking methods, and the restaurants' stories. If one is a fan of barbeque and happens to be in the Bluegrass state, then "Ky BBQ" will help one make a knowledgeable choice of dining establishments. If one isn't going out to eat, the book will make you feel as though you've visited the restaurant through it's first-person account of Mr. Berry's visit. I particularly enjoyed reading about his visits to barbeque places I have frequented. Very enjoyable book if you love barbeque -- especially if you are in Kentucky.

Mostly just a guide to BBQ joints in each region
By J. Rogers
This is more about reviews of BBQ joints. KY BBQ is famous for mutton so I thought this book would share some of that information - unfortunately there's not one recipe for BBQ mutton. Also the kindle version doesn't have an index - you have to search.

The Best BBQ Book on the Smoker
By SW
Wes Berry, a native Kentuckian, represents KY BBQ with pride and elegance in "The KY BBQ Book." Berry blends BBQ vocabulary with genuine character as he travels around the state describing the multitude of calories that filled his palate. "The KY BBQ Book" is relatable to any audience, young or old, novice BBQ lover or professional BBQ dweller. Personally, I'm the furthest thing away from a BBQ expert, but I enjoyed the book just as much as a person who would smoke a slab of meat every day. Berry's writing is playful and artistic in its own way. With each new place, Berry makes you feel like you're sitting across the table enjoying the meat with him. Through each stop, I picture myself walking in the doors, sitting down, enjoying some BBQ, and heading off to the next destination. If I were traveling the state, I wouldn't leave this book behind. Berry points out all the mom-and-pop BBQ joints across KY. As a fellow Kentuckian, now Californian, "The KY BBQ Book" brings back a sense of pride I have for my beloved state. My Old Kentucky Home is represented well due to Berry's book. "The KY BBQ Book" is a must-have for all inside and outside of the state. If you want to study up on the different styles of BBQ, give this book a taste. If you live in KY, you better have this book on the smoker. And, if you enjoy reading a book with sincere character by (what seems to be) a warm-hearted fella, give this book a read.

The Magic Bean Tree: A Legend from Argentina, by Nancy Van Laan

In the middle of the wide Argentine pampas there once grew a magic tree. Above this tree slept a bird so evil it could stop the rain from falling. And not far from this tree lived a brave boy who one day set out to save his village and all the creatures from dying of thirst. Illustrated with charming folk-art-like paintings and retold with simplicity and drama, this legend of a child's courage and faith explains why Argentineans believe that good luck can be found in the shade of a carob tree.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 5AThis pourquoi tale from the Quechua people of Argentina tells of the first tree in the world, a carob. When drought comes to the pampas, a young boy named Topec goes in search of rain. The carob tree tells him that he must send away the Great Bird of the Underworld that roosts in its highest branches. Topec brings his people to make noise; the animals join in the racket, and the bird flies away allowing the gods to hear the people's prayers and send rain. As a reward, the carob sheds beans, which provide food for everyone; soon carob trees spread throughout Argentina. The theme of a small or weak animal or child who saves the people is eternally satisfying, and children can easily identify with the hero, although Topec's task is less arduous than some. Vidal's stylized paintings are dramatic and colorful, especially in the portrayal of the supernatural bird. One problematic element of this well-told tale is that although the carob (Ceratonia siliqua) is indeed so useful as to seem magical, it is not indigenous to the New World, and thus could not have been known to the Quechuas before the arrival of the Spanish. Also, the tree pictured often looks like a tamarind, also an Old World native.APam Gosner, formerly at Maplewood Memorial Library, NJ

From Booklist
Ages 4^-8. In the long ago of legend, one tree stood alone in the middle of the Argentine pampas. "Full of magic, the carob tree stretched toward the sky like a green umbrella." But the Life Giver has stopped sending the rain, and when the rest of the pampas is scorched, a young boy courageously sets out to bring back the rain. Blown beneath the leafy, green carob tree by the dry North Wind, Topec is told by the magic tree that he must scare away the Bird of the Underworld, who sleeps at night in the tree's top branches and who has been blocking the people's prayers for rain. With the help of his entire village, Topec leads the noise that frightens the evil bird from the treetop; the rains come, and the carob tree rewards the brave boy and his people with a shower of golden-red beans from which more carob trees will grow. Similar to her work for Aardema's Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain (1981), Vidal's shimmering, folk art^-style paintings are well matched to the elegant simplicity and drama of Van Laan's retelling. A glossary and list of sources are included. Annie Ayres

Learning From Legends
By Cathie F.
I found the book very interesting. I would disagree with the reading level, however. It could be read by children in grades 2-4, but understood by somewhat younger children. The references to the various gods could be confusing to children who do not have any previous knowledge of them. The pictures are wonderful and the children I read the book to really enjoyed them. It is a great read-aloud book, and one I am going to use with students in grades 2-6 who are in resource reading classes.

An Argentine version of a Quechua story tells how young Topec saved his people from drought by going out in search of rain, aided by the advice of a wise old carob tree. Argentine-born illustrator Beatriz Vidal uses rich colors and a naive style to enhance the mood and setting of this ancient story.
