For this purpose, a method of fixed size LS-SVM is proposed where the estimation is done in the primal space in relation to a Nystr�m sampling with active selection of support vectors. The methods are illustrated with several examples.

I am using LS-SVMlab software toolbox and this book is helpful to understand the background. This book is NOT the tutorial I am searching for. Unfortunately, neither is the User's Guide. I'm looking for a detailed tutorial on NARX time series implementation. Still, this book is helpful.

About the Author

HARLOW C. LANDPHAIR is Professor of Landscape Architecture at Texas A&M University and author of Site Reconnaissance and Engineering (Prentice Hall, 1985). He holds a Doctor of Environmental Design (DED) from Texas A&M and is also a Research Scientist and head of the Environmental Management Program for the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M. His current research is in erosion control materials and in methods and design implementation technology.

Don't buy it new!

It is unbelievable that this book is $80. I agree with the other reviewers that this book falls short of what a professional reference should be, and the typos are plentiful. For the money, Time Saver Standards is a much better buy.

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of other good options for a construction reference at the time being, so if you run across a cheaper copy of this book it still might be worth picking up. Though none of the topics are treated with great depth, it does manage to get the ideas across and could be helpful for someone just entering the profession or needing a general refresher.

This book is just a very basic overview of construction, and other supplemental references about the topics covered would definitely be a must.

Poor Execution
By - seeking higher standards
Without a doubt, this is the worst edited publication I have ever read. While the information contained in this book is valuable, the editorial missteps and omissions are maddeningly distracting. Some examples include sentences that don't finish with periods, formulas with typos, poorly reproduced graphics, mathematical errors (in the examples!), objects omitted from sentences, and a contour map that requires a mirror to decipher (figure 3-5). As a teaching tool, this text inspires confussion and frustration rather than delivering clarity and instruction. A 4th edition might correct the many errors, but this edition is far too expensive for it's lack of professionalism.

The only one of its kind, unfortunately

I know one of the authors; he was actually a professor of mine before he retired. I know that he knows his stuff, so I'm praying that this mess of a book is the fault of the publisher.

The typos alone make this text incomprehensible. Add to that illegible diagrams and a complete disorganization between text and headings, and you end up with headaches from just trying to read this silly thing. Unfortunately, this text is the only one of its kind, as far as I can tell.

This book is meant as a comprehensive landscape architecture construction text for students and professionals and covers everything from grading to irrigation to structural load, although not deeply enough to be your only reference.

About the Author
Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

Dr. Michael C. Ehrhardt is a Professor in the Finance Department and is the Paul and Beverly Castagna Professor of Investments. He completed his undergraduate work in Civil Engineering at Swarthmore College. After working several years as an engineer, he earned his M.S. in Operations Research and Ph.D. in Finance from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Ehrhardt has taught extensively at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels in the areas of investments, corporate finance, and capital markets. He has directed and served on numerous dissertation committees and is a member of the team that developed and delivered the integrative first year of the MBA program. Dr. Ehrhardt teaches in Executive Education Programs and consults in the areas of corporate valuation, value-based compensation plans, financial aspects of supply-chain management, and the cost of capital. He has been awarded the Allen G. Keally Outstanding Teacher Award, the Tennessee Organization of MBA Students Outstanding Faculty member, the College of Business Administration Research & Teaching Award, and the John B. Ross Outstanding Teaching Award in the College of Business. Much of his research focuses on corporate valuation and asset pricing models, including pricing models for interest-rate sensitive instruments. His work has been published in numerous journals, including The Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Financial Management, The Financial Review, The Journal of Financial Research, and The Journal of Banking and Finance. He has also authored or co-authored several books addressing various areas of finance.

Not work the paper its on...

This was useless for my MBA studies. That assessment is partially because my professor did not require use of this book. However, the biggest issue is that the manual is poorly formatted, dry, and in some cases not aligned to the text. I bought it, read a couple chapters, put it on a shelf and never looked at it again. The manual didn't offer any value. I suggest sticking with the textbook or Cengage learning modules to better learn this subject.

Iain Rice is one of Britain’s best-known model railway authors with 18 books to his credit, his most recent being Railway Modelling: The Realistic Way. He is a regular contributor to British and American model railway magazines, for which he produces his own diagrams and illustrations. He is a highly respected railway modeller with more than 40 years’ experience.

Solid advice regardless of where you live

I thought this book was also a extended version of some of Iain's work for Kalmbach. When it first arrived, I quickly paged through it and was not overly impressed. I knew there had to be more to it. I made a concerted effort to read and digest each chapter. In doing so, much more information and value came out of it. Regardless of the fact that it is geared towards the British modeling public, it had great suggestions and ideas that I intend to use in my current planning. I found myself looking for British models in the Walthers catalog.

This is not a "Track Plan" book...

This book is more about the design process of how to build a plausible, realistic representation of a selected scene or scenes. It is not a track plan book that will fill you with a large collection of plans to choose from. I have noticed reference that people have bought this book thinking it was a Kalmbach book, or similar. If that is what you are after, then these suggestions are worthwhile from Kalmbach.

However, if you are not overly concerned whether or not the context is North American Railroad specific, this book is littered with some very thought provoking discussion and examples of how to effectively design a plausible model railroad, within the space requirements that you have. Be that a large room sized empire or just a small shelf atop a book case. As Iain Rice states, this a more or less an Holistic approach to achieving modelling objectives.

The chapters cover discussions on site, height, and lighting, basebords (benchwork), prototype issues, visual design, operational design and presentation, planning process and a very interesting chapter on things you can't ignore which covers curves, radii, clearance gradients, track geometry etc. Some examples of track plans are included in the last chapter, to demonstrate the concepts proposed throughout the book.

This is a very comprehensive design manual that looks at how to achieve a realistic looking layout that operates realistically. Through Iain Rices elements of observation and consistency, you will be armed with an appropriate tool set to develop and execute a realistic representation of a "prototype" or "fictitious" model layout.

Please do not get caught up on the fact that this book mainly deals with the British Railway genre, for this is a fact of life that Mr Rice is resident of the UK. It would be obvious that this would be his first port of call on the subject matter. However, the information presented and once digested, is transportable to any region, locale, genre, or period. So if you model North American Railroads, the information provide by Iain Rice is just as valid as it would be for modelling Railroads in Japan or China, or even something as eclectic as Iceland Railways!

A very interesting read and well worth the cover price.

This book touches on all aspects of design for model railways/roads. It discusses in length lighting, setting, time frame and construction and makes a case for smaller layouts. The book also touches on a few (British) layouts for small spaces.

A huge step backwards from the previous edition

It is not often that, when a new edition of language course is published, it is actually much worse than the previous one. Unfortunately, this course is one of those exceptions. I'll briefly outline why you'd be much better off with the earlier edition of Colloquial Romanian by the same author.

1. Help with pronunciation. In Romanian, any syllable of a word can be stressed. In almost all Romanian courses I've seen, this syllable is market to help the learner get the pronunciation right. It was marked in the earlier edition of Colloquial Romanian but for some strange reason it has been droppen in this edition.

2. Vocabulary lists. In any good language course, each new chapter contains a vocabulary lists of all the new words in that chapter. That was the case in the previous edition, but not so in this one. There are still vocabulary lists in each chapter, but they are very short and arbitary.

3. Grammar. In the earlier edition of Colloquial Romanian, the Romanian grammar was described in a detailed yet very user-friendly way. In the new edition, there aren't many explanations and they are likely to be confusing for the beginner.

In short, this book is more mysterious than any detective store. I have no idea why the author decided to downgrade his own book to this extent. The one improvement made is that the conversations are more up to date and relevant in this course. If the author would have made those changes but kept the pronunciation help, stuck to complete vocabulary lists and maintained the same grammar explanations, this would have been the best Romanian course on the market. Now, it's not only a rather useless course, it's a course that's much worse than its own previous edition.

It is a very good book covering all the structures to live in Romania, and now to travel. It contains all the grammar, verbs, conjunctions, prepositions, etc. It lacks only the useful vocabulary to travel as how to buy tickets to catch a train, how to find out an address, to get a taxi an so forth.
I recommend this book to all who want to acquire romanian language to a full level. The tapes are good, except for the fact there are only three different voices (and two of then of old people. The young people have better voice!).
The glossary is not complete. The book has about 1.300 words.
It is a good purchase.

Great book to learn Romanian

While there are not many books on the market to learn Romanian, Colloquial Romanian is one of the better ones. Grammar is easily explained, and one can learn much from the dialoques. New grammar is introduced inside the dialogues, so that one can understand the grammar easier. This is great book; however, one the best tools to learn a lanague is Pimsleur. I highly recommend Pimsleur language courses.
