Histories of the First World War are often written from a British perspective, ignoring the coalition element of the conflict and the French point of view. In Strategy and Command, Roy Prete offers a major new interpretation supported by in-depth research in French archival sources. In the first of three projected volumes, Prete crafts a behind-the-scenes look at Anglo-French command relations during World War I, from the start of the conflict until 1915, when trench warfare drastically altered the situation. Drawing on extensive archival research, Prete argues that the British government's primary interest lay in the defence of the empire; the small expeditionary force sent to France was progressively enlarged because the French, especially Commander-in-Chief Joseph Joffre, dragged their British ally into a progressively greater involvement. Several crises in Anglo-French command relations derived from these competing strategic objectives. New information gleaned from French public and private archives - including private diaries - enlarge our understanding of key players in the allied relationship. Prete shows that suspicion and distrust on the part of both sides of the alliance continued to inform relations well after the circumstances creating them had changed. Strategy and Command clearly establishes the fundamental strategic differences between the allies at the start of the war, setting the stage for the next two volumes.

"Prete has told this story well, in clear, readable narrative ... If he completes the contemplated volumes of Joffre's command in 1915 and 1916, then it will mark an important and substantial work ... as an introduction to the theme they should prove invaluable." The Journal of British Studies

An excellent and thought-provoking military history, especially recommended for college library collections
By Midwest Book Review
Strategy and Command: The Anglo-French Coalition on the Western Front, 1914 is the first of three projected volumes examining the First World War from the French point of view (as opposed to the more ubiquitous British perspective), from the inception of hostilities to 1915, when trench warfare changed the world forever. Drawing heavily upon new information from French public and private archives, including private diaries, Strategy and Command reveals that suspicion and distrust were omnipresent on both sides of the alliance, and that both sides had drastic and fundamental differences in their strategies. An excellent and thought-provoking military history, especially recommended for college library collections.

It was Richard Feynman’s outrageous and scintillating method of teaching that earned him legendary status among students and professors of physics. From 1961 to 1963, Feynman delivered a series of lectures at the California Institute of Technology that revolutionized the teaching of physics around the world. Six Easy Pieces, taken from these famous Lectures on Physics, represent the most accessible material from the series.

In these classic lessons, Feynman introduces the general reader to the following topics: atoms, basic physics, energy, gravitation, quantum mechanics, and the relationship of physics to other topics. With his dazzling and inimitable wit, Feynman presents each discussion with a minimum of jargon. Filled with wonderful examples and clever illustrations, Six Easy Pieces is the ideal introduction to the fundamentals of physics by one of the most admired and accessible physicists of modern times.

From Library Journal
This book reprints the six easiest chapters from Feynman's celebrated Lectures on Physics (LJ 12/15/63), which the Nobel Prize-winning scientist delivered from 1961 to 1963 at the California Institute of Technology. Intended for as wide an audience as possible, these chapters are primarily qualitative in nature, with a minimum of formal mathematics. They discuss atoms, basic physics, the relation of physics to other sciences, the conservation of energy, gravitation, and quantum behavior. While this informative work provides a relevant historical perspective on the essentials of physics, the result is somewhat superficial. Nonetheless, because Lectures on Physics is out of print and because the information is still relevant, reprinting these specific chapters was probably a realistic move. The material will be readily understood by scholars, physics students, and informed lay readers. Recommended for academic and public libraries. (Audio tape and CD packages are also available.)-Donald G. Frank, Harvard Univ. Lib., Cambridge, Mass.

A few more tries like this and even I will begin to get it
By Frederick L. Merritt Jr.
If you have been reading the reviews of this book you might be beginning to suspect that this book is a great place to start. You're right. Feynman uses easy to understand examples and relates them very well to his subject matter.
After I saw the 10 year anniversary edition to "A Breif History of Time" I felt guilty and I read my 10 year old copy. I should have read this book first. I would have been much better prepared to read the other. Both books were great but Feynman did a better job of relating the scientific to the mundane.

Addresses those nagging questions I've always had
By Joshua Davies
I took three semesters of physics to complete my undergraduate degree; I'll never forget the dumbfounded look on my instructor's face when we were studying electrical force and I asked, "so, why *do* protons attract electrons, anyway?" The professor sputtered and said, "it's just a force of the universe. Shut up and stop asking stupid questions." Or when the instructor presented Newton's third law ("every action has an equal and opposite reaction"), and I asked, "So why is it that when I push against a wall it doesn't push back and fall apart?" The answer was, "Well, the wall doesn't fall apart does it? So that's that. Shut up and stop asking stupid questions." Dr. Feynman addresses *exactly* these types of questions, over and over again. (If the earth and the moon are attracted to each other, why don't they crash into each other? Why are snowflakes shaped the way they are? Why does blowing on soup cool it down?) I only wish this book had been 1300 pages rather than 130 - every page answered some nagging problem I've had with the physics explanation of the universe. I don't think you can learn physics from this book, but you can get excited enough about it to start digging around and discovering more, like I did.

Reads very quickly
By Atheen
I have heard of Feynman's collection of physics lectures for a long time and had intended reading them "one of these days" but never seemed to get to it. When a couple of friends and I formed a book club to discuss science and other types of expository prose, and one of them suggested this book, I decided "this is the day."

In reading Six Easy Pieces, I had a distinct sympathy with Feynman's undergraduate students. The man's mind must have run at the speed of light, ideas just firing off like gunshots. For a decade that had only reel to reel tape recorders, and big ones at that, the only resort for the student taking notes would have to have been a strong skill at shorthand.

I had expected a more difficult and thorough book, but the author presents a very simple, almost too brief, analysis of basic physics in this volume, which is a section of a larger text based on his lectures. In it he illustrates the close association, even a basic underpinning, of other sciences by physics. He notes relationships with earth sciences, particularly geology, with astronomy/cosmology, biology, and chemistry in particular. What he doesn't do is go into very great detail on how these areas relate to one another, his discussion of chemistry being the most thorough of them.

The book is very short, and the author spends much of it on the history and relationships of physics as a science. It is more like a general introduction written to preface material presented later in the course. He does a nice job of explaining the issue of particle/wave duality in electromagnetic and other waves in the final chapter of the book, which also suggests that the bulk of the book is "introductory" in nature and that more is to come later.

Athough the author presents some equations and graphs, those who are math-shy needn't be daunted; they are straight forward and helpful in understanding the points the author makes. Furthermore, Feynman's narative style goes very rapidly. He jumps from topic to topic, intercalating brief stories and amusing comments to put his message across in an entertaining manner, rather than in a ponderous discussion or chalk boards full of formulae.

Although the reader who has no physics background may enjoy learning something of the field through this book, I suspect those with a science background may find one of the more recent books on the subject more informative.

In the midst –or possibly the end- of the greatest bubble the art market has ever known, this book is an analysis of Sehgal’s work in relation to the art market and looks at the value of art. Artist Tino Sehgal does not produce any tangible work, but performance-like ‘constructed situations’, the photographing and documentation of which he prohibits. However, they are exhibited and sold like any other work of art. Based on the writings of great scholars in the field, this book investigates why the institutional framework of the museum is essential to Sehgal’s work and constitutes it as a commodity, and how immaterial art can circulate through the art market. Tracing Sehgal’s legacy back to Yves Klein and Marcel Duchamp, we see their lasting influences that contributed to the current art market in which works are sold as a system of IP-rights. A look is taken at these artists’ tautological claim to producing visual art, the mystification of their practice and the establishing of brand names. Exploring issues that all art is inscribed in, we arrive at a situation in art history where the value and the price of art seem to have been conflated.

Excellent Theory...Especially For Early Childhood Professionals
By Reginald Williams
Even though it falls a bit short in a lot of practical application, Hoy & Miskel do a superb job in outlining just about every possible ed admin theory that is relevant in educationa entities today.

The top sections of this book that are DEFINITELY worth reading are Chapter 10's discussion on shared decision-making, Chapter 12's discussion on leadership, Chapter 4's discussion on what motivates individuals, and Chapter 5's section on climate & culture.

I recommend this book and along with Caruso & Fawcett's SUPERVISION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION: A DEVELOPMENTAL PERSPECTIVE.

Had to buy it for a class
By momteacherdean
The price on Amazon can't be beat. Pair it with Amazon Prime and it's a winner. The content is another story. It is dry, dry, dry reading. I am supposed to be reading it now, and I am doing everything but reading. I get that it's not the most exciting topic, but the author doesn't do much to make it any more "readable." It's so dry and so data heavy, and really, it you are going to be a Principal and don't know half the stuff in here by nature, then you probably should pick another profession! But, the content is good. Just wish it had a bit more personality!
