This book ended too soon for me.

I loved the story told by a 14 yr old boy and his perception of what was happening in the world around him. The relationship with his grandfather Rucker was so important and special for his life. I found myself feeling envious of the camaraderie found within the community of Cold Sassy Tree even though they had their prejudicial narrow belief systems. The community still had a deep sense of love and commitment for each other. Grandfather Rucker was not only important as grandfather but as a patriarch for the whole community. I was amazed that he was supposed to be old at 54 years old. I guess they figured age different around 1900. Anyway his thinking was progressive for the town and being a leader he was an agent for change whether they (his family and the town) wanted to or not. I enjoyed the book immensely and was sorry it ended.

Look out for Grandpa

I liked this book but I do think the characters could have had a bit more depth. Will, the young man telling the story, is a typical teenage boy who pulls teenage pranks, but he is very in tune to his grandpa, who loves him like the son he never had. Will likes to gossip and makes up crazy stories about people, especially his aunt Loma. The old deep south language is sometimes a bit frustrating to read but this is how they spoke in the 1900's. This story is about family and the love that a family has for one another. Grandpa is the force behind the family and he is a very colorful character. He does what he wants, says what he thinks, and always gets his way. There is a secret that Grandpa's young wife (Miss Love) reveals to him one night in an effort for him to understand what she has been through in her past, and why she never married, and Will is on the other side of the door and hears the conversation that takes place between Grandpa and Miss Love. Read the book and find out what happens next.

I'm a ripeness ia all kind of reader and this book called to me when I saw it on the shelf. So I ordered the Kindle edition. I have to admit that the first chapter was off-putting. Partly uneven tone. Partly a certain preciousness. But I persisted and the second chapter was better as were the following chapters. I was hooked.

There are occasional difficulties in the author's decision to narrate the book from a first person point of view, that POV being a fourteen year old boy. Two scenes turn on Will Tweedy overhearing highly intimate exchanges between his Gradnfather and the Grandfather's much younger second wife. These do test credulity.

That said the amazing strengths of this novel more than compensate for these lapses. The setting: a small town in Georgia in July of 1906; the characterizations; the inventive plotting are simply amazing. Will Tweedy's vernacular use of language is a delight not a distraction.

Humor abounds as does what Henry James called "felt life." I came to care about these people in a way that seldom happens for me. I wonder what they're doing now as if they were people I had known and loved. The only other book that did this for me was The Makioka Sisters.

I finished this book last night. I missed my Pilates class to finish it. That's how good this book is--because I really like Pilates. But I like this book more.

About the Author
Sergei L. Loiko, a Los Angeles Times correspondent and photographer for 24 years, has covered wars, crises and daily life in Russia and the former Soviet states for the Los Angeles Times since 1991. He reported from northern Afghanistan in 2001 and from Iraq in 2003. In 2005, he contributed to then-Moscow Bureau Chief Kim Murphy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning reports. His book, “Shock and Awe, War in Iraq,” published in Russian in 2004, was a regional best-seller. Before joining the Times, he was a television producer, a sergeant in the Strategic Rocket Forces and an English language high school teacher. Loiko graduated from Moscow State Pedagogical University. In 2015 Loiko was awarded Overseas Press Club Bob Considine award and the Los Angeles Times Editorial award for his series of stories form the war-torn Donbass in eastern Ukraine.

“Airport� is a novel based on a true story of the heroic and dramatic 242-day defense of Donetsk airport by ragtag Ukrainian troops heavily outnumbered and outgunned by pro-Russia separatists and regular Russian troops which invaded eastern Ukraine in the summer of 2014.
In between graphically chilling accounts of the airport siege saga, the author leads us through the entire history of Ukraine's 2013-2015 popular revolution against the corrupt Moscow-backed regime in Kiev and the armed confrontation that ensued between mainly inexperienced volunteer Ukrainian troops and the mighty invading force of Russian mercenaries, local rebels and Russian army units.
The novel is not only and not so much about the stunningly outrageous war that should have never happened and was thought by many as impossible. It is also about human experience: love and hatred, betrayal and loyalty, passion and submission, courage and cowardice, and a whole range of human emotions and behavior in tests and trials.
The novel consists of chapters centered on one particular character and his or her story of war. The main character, Alexey, who ties the chapters together, witnesses all these stories and experiences. Alexey is an American photographer of Russian descent covering the war in Donbass for a major U.S. daily newspaper on both sides of the front line. At the same time, he experiences a devastating personal tragedy that leaves him in shatters. It also casts for him a totally new view of his personal role in the bloody conflict, pushing him to an unlikely option that leads to a surprisingly dramatic climax.
The author’s compassionate and richly detailed writing gives the reader a vivid, truthful and moving picture from the inside of the most recent and, as of December 2015, still continuing war in Europe.

“Aeroport” is the latest release from the acclaimed war correspondent and author Sergey Loiko. The title refers to the bloody battle in the Donetsk Airport in Easter Ukraine where the local rebels tried to fend off the invading pro-Russian forces. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has been much forgotten and eclipsed by other recent developments in the world, but it still rages on nonetheless. Mr.Loiko has documented the wars in Afghanistan in Iraq, and has now spent four days in the Donetsk Airport documenting that battle. His immersive narrative will throw the reader right in the heart of combat; to the sounds of missile and bullet strikes, agonizing moans of wounded soldiers, weeps of grieving mothers, the smell of burning flesh in destroyed vehicles, and other graphic horrors of this forgotten and ignored war. At long last, the much awaited and anticipated depiction is here.

A usefull introduction to Lakhovsky work

This review needs three opinions.

1.- About edition work. I hoped more from this book, poor edition work, a lot of photocopies and bad photocopies,very very little and blurred text and photos. note: 2 from 1 to 5.

2.-Technical information: Indubitably here you can find info difficult to find at Internet. I believe which if you have a technical engineering degree and read books from Lakhovsky, Tesla, D'Arsonval and others you can build a strong compilation (far better than this book) of oscillating healling waves that will drive you to a full understanding of biologhy and MWO, electronic's and MWO and at last health. Any way it's a good starting place. Note: 4 from 1 to 5.

Toby J. Karten�is an experienced educator who has been immersed in the field of special education for her entire career. As an accomplished author and researcher, she has presented successful staff development to local, national, and international audiences. Toby is affiliated with�Drew and Monmouth University and is an adjunct professor and graduate instructor at the Regional Training Center, which is affiliated with Gratz College and The College of New Jersey. Being involved in the field of special education for the past three decades has afforded Ms. Karten an opportunity to help many children and adults from elementary through graduate levels around the world. She has been a resource teacher, staff developer, adult educator, and inclusion coach and consultant in New York and New Jersey schools and in many districts nationally and globally. In addition to her roles as an inclusion coach, student and family advocate, professional developer, mentor and resource teacher, Toby designed graduate courses titled From Challenge to Success; LD, ADHD, and the Spectrum and�Skills and Strategies for Inclusion and disABILITY Awareness. �She�has trained instructors in three states to teach her courses. In addition, she has designed online courses for NaMaYa titled Collaborative Practices for Inclusive Classrooms�and Interventions for Students with Dyslexia and Other Reading Differences. She has been recognized by both the Council for Exceptional Children and the New Jersey Department of Education as an exemplary educator, receiving two Teacher of the Year awards. She earned an undergraduate degree in special education from Brooklyn College, a master of science in special education from the College of Staten Island, a supervisory degree from Georgian Court University, and an honorary doctorate from Gratz College. Toby has authored several books and resources about inclusion practices and the CCSS, which are currently used for instruction on many college and university campuses and schools throughout the world.

Ms. Karten is married, has a son, and a few dogs. She enjoys teaching, reading, writing, artwork, and most of all, learning. �Toby believes that inclusion does not begin and end in the classroom, but is a philosophy that continues throughout life. Diane di Prima is the author of thirty-four books of poetry and prose, which have been translated into sixteen languages. So its porno. Whatever. That's why I read it. The background of 50's New York is well written. Her description using all the senses isn't obnoxiously verbose like some boring wordsmiths. Maybe the pornography was added for marketing, I don't know. But it went well with her squalid living, listening to good music, eating and drinking, and hanging with her interesting misfit coterie. Even though this is a fictional memoir, I just know her real youth makes my teenage years in high school seem dull.

beatnik, not beat

a recent article on diane diprima in the chicago tribune (4/19/2000) called di prima's "memoirs of a beatnik" - "a sort of insider's Beat exploitation book Di Prima wrote in 1968 for Maurice Girodias' Olympia Press in Paris because she needed money badly--and quickly." It goes on to state that "It is mostly accurate, [di prima] said, except for the sex parts."
with that said, i doubt the book aspires to make any type of high-brow feminist or literary statement. the fact that is does make any such statement can be attributed to the time in which it was written. it is basically an account of a young woman venturing out on her own in times when young women did not do such things. young women lived at home, maybe went away to college, met a nice suitable young man, and got married. maybe had a job as a typist in the meantime. sex was not something young women from nice families experimented with.
this is not to say the book does not have its merits. it is artfully written, intelligent, and poetic. it's a great look at the obstacles women faced when they decided to do their own thing, especially when that differed from society's norms. it's a peek inside the counterculture that was growing larger and larger thanks to a certain jack kerouac. all of this raises the book above being just plain old erotica. as a fan of beat writing and culture, i enjoyed the book very much.
of course, the drawback to this book is that someone reading this book without knowledge of the context in which it was published will come away from it with a view of the beats that is as cartoonish and two-dimensional as the rest of society's view was of them at the time. "oh wow, look, the beats were always having sex." - "oh yeah, man, that's what they were about. coffee, sex, and alcohol. (and bongos and poetry and black berets)"
maybe that's why the title of this book is "memoirs of a beatnik," and not "memoirs of a beat." major difference.

Sensitive and Compelling Biography of the Lower East Side

Compelled to write after reading the other reviews-- I read this book when it was first published and found the sex (and feminism) secondary. This book read like a biography of most white women who chose to leave home and live on the Lower East Side in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 1990s. What blew me away was the quality of the prose and the parallels with the lives of women (usually White, Italian, or Jewish) I knew who moved there in the 1970s or 80s to recreate themselves. Side by side are Diane di Prima, Madonna di Ciccione (yes The Madonna), and countless women who have had 15 minutes or less of fame in the contemporary media. This book SINGS with the struggles and pain that many women put themselves through to break the yoke of suburbia. Read it and judge for yourself. Unfortunately, it is a tribute to how history repeats itself.
